Remains of Tropical Storm Gaston might strengthen by Tuesday
TAMPA, Sep 05, 2010 (Tampa Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
The tattered remains of former Tropical Storm Gaston could knit back together in the next few days and forecasters say a new tropical depression may form by Tuesday.
Gaston didn't have long as a tropical storm in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, forming Tuesday and deteriorating into just an area of low pressure by Wednesday afternoon.
But forecasters at the National Hurricane Center said there is a 70 percent chance of the storm reforming as it moves slowly west.
Computer tracking models show Gaston staying on a generally westward course through Friday and heading toward Hispaniola by the end of the work week. The models are fairly uniform in the prediction.
Most of the computer intensity models show Gaston regaining tropical storm status by Tuesday, then reaching hurricane strength by Friday. However, the models vary widely on how powerful Gaston could become, ranging from a major hurricane to a Category 1 storm.
In addition to Gaston's remains, forecasters are also watching an area of low pressure tucked into the southwest corner of the Gulf of Mexico they say has a 60 percent chance of forming a tropical depression before heading inland into Mexico or Texas on Monday or Tuesday.
Most of the tracking models show the system hitting land by Tuesday or before.
The hurricane center has stopped issuing advisories for Hurricane Earl that has transformed into an area of rain and wind that is moving over Canada but no longer as a tropical system.
Forecasters expect the storm to head east across the North Atlantic before falling apart by Wednesday or Thursday.
