Regina health region glitch faxes 13 patients' reports to wrong place

(Canadian Press DataFile Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) REGINA - The Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region says a software glitch led to 13 patients' reports being faxed to the wrong number.

Marlene Smadu, the region's vice-president of quality and transformation, said Friday it first came to their attention in January.

They tried to correct the issue, but Smadu says the problem resurfaced sporadically over the following months.

In all, 13 patients were affected.

Smadu said the problem with automated system turned out to be a digital issue that added an extra digits to the recipient's phone number.

She added it's difficult to make the process completely digital because not every doctor uses the same computer program.

She estimates 1,800 faxes are sent daily and it's important that they are sent in a timely matter.

The people who received the wrong faxes have destroyed them.
