SAN ANTONIO -- Clayton Parks is no slouch of a quarterback. The Sonora senior set a school record for passing yards Friday night against Refugio.
Unfortunately for him, that was after his second pass of the night was intercepted by the Refugio's Justin Padilla and returned for a 35-yard touchdown pass.
Parks's pass did not lose the game for Sonora, nor did he really have an impact on the 41-24 final. What it exemplified, however, was what both teams did with the football after forcing first half turnovers.
Sonora (12-1) turned the football over twice, Refugio thrice.
The Bobcats (13-0) converted both Broncos gifts into touchdowns. Meanwhile, the corresponding Sonora drives were for a combined 55 yards and included an interception.
That second turnover proved to be costly. Leading 7-6 with less than a minute remaining in the first half Refugio linebacker Richard Tuttle saw the running back flare out his left and stepped in front of him.
"We needed something to get the momentum. It just so happened to be me that got the pick. We capitalized on that," said Tuttle, who took the ball 50 yards to set up the Bobcat offense.
"I caught it and I saw open space. I tried to hurry up and get in there. All of a sudden I saw people pop out of no where. My legs were dead so I dove at the end, and didn't quite get it."
He was a yard short, but Shiloh Whetsel jumped over the pile for a touchdown with 12 seconds remaining in the first half.
Sonora football coach David Sine said his team has been a focused bunch all season long.
That did not waver Friday night. What changed was the speed of the Broncos opponent.
"If we could go in and score it's a different situation," Sine said. "But, we're still only down eight at the time against the No. 1 team in the state. We would have taken that at any time. They got the score and it didn't click tonight. I think that's a credit to the speed that they have on defense. I wish those guys the best of luck."
Refugio scored 27 unanswered points to start the second half. The Bobcats went on to turn the ball over a fourth time in the game, but by then it was too late for the Broncos to recover.
"It was amazing. We came out on the bottom," said Sonora wide receiver and former Goliad player Imoni Cross, who had 127 total yards and three touchdowns. "We had our chances, but we couldn't get it rolling.
"I am glad we made it this far. I love playing with everyone here. It's probably the best football year of my life."
