Rathbun Lake Association elects board members

(Daily Iowegian (Centerville, Iowa) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Nov. 21--The Rathbun Lake Association elected four members to its board of directors during its annual meeting Wednesday night at Honey Creek Resort State Park. All four will serve three year terms beginning in 2009.

--Don Burg, who works for the Bentley Corporation and is the site manager for Fox Tail Cabins, The Cave boat storage and other Bentley projects, all located on the north side of the lake, has been an active promoter of Rathbun Lake since coming to the area.

--David Howe, loan officer and vice president at Iowa Trust & Savings Bank in Centerville and current Rathbun Lake Association president, actively promotes the lake and surrounding areas.

--Deb Ollinger, who works at Rathbun Regional Water Association, and current Rathbun Lake Association secretary, along with her husband, Frank, own Rathbun RV Rentals on the south side of the lake.

--Dan Sales, who owns Cook Insurance Sales and Associates, along with his wife, Doreen, recently became owners of the Buck Creek Cabins on the southeast side of Rathbun Lake.

The Rathbun Lake Association will elect officers during its regular monthly board meeting at 5 p.m. Jan. 14 at the Rathbun Regional Water Maintenance shop.

Wednesday night's activities also included a presentation by Honey Creek Resort State Park Manager Mike Godby. The message he brought was one of change.

"We're changing from going from the construction mode to the operations side of the park," he said. "And that to me means we are getting more into doing activities and programs here at the park to attract people."

Godby said they plan to use the park's natural surroundings to promote outdoor, or how-to activities, like kayaking, archery, fishing, dutch oven cooking and astronomy to attract people. There also will be indoor events, such as "roving interpretation," he said.

"To where we may be out here in the Lodge. You may come in some day and one of us may be standing there with a ring neck prairie snake," Godby said. "This gives us an opportunity to actually provide many different things that we normally wouldn't be able to draw people for."

He asked the approximately 60 in attendance to become actively involved in the change.

"You can do this by either volunteering to do a program if you have a particular outdoor skill you would like to share," Godby said. "Or information that you would like to present, we would sure be happy to have you. Or simply bring a friend and get outside with us. We'll take it from there."

He said more than 1,000 people so far have participated in activities at the park.

The mission of the Rathbun Lake Association is to enhance the safe use and enjoyment of Rathbun Lake through education, information, and promotion in cooperation with our membership, while preserving its natural resources.
