PTAB Invalidates GTL's VOIP Patent Claims - Finding Them Previously Invented by Securus

DALLAS, May 3, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Securus Technologies, a leading provider of civil and criminal justice technology solutions for public safety, investigation, corrections and monitoring, announced today that it prevailed at invalidating GTL patent claims before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) on April 29, 2016.

Securus Technologies Inc.

Securus filed an Inter Partes Review (IPR) on October 24, 2014, petitioning the PTAB to review GTL's Patent Number 7,551,732, which relates generally to an apparatus and methodology for recording, at a centralized location, telephone conversations conducted at a remote location, such as penal institutions. The PTAB issued its Final Written Decision on April 29, 2016, and found that all instituted claims were invalid, because each such claim was disclosed in Securus' Patent Number 7,899,167.

"We were pleased that the PTAB agreed with Securus on these points and invalidated all instituted claims of this key GTL patent," said Richard A. ("Rick") Smith, Chief Executive Officer of Securus Technologies. "Once again, we beat them to the punch and used invalidation through the PTAB as the appropriate legal process to defeat this GTL patent. Not surprisingly, it was a Securus patent that invalidated GTL's claims."

"The fact that the PTAB found that Securus had already invented this technology was especially gratifying, and confirms our position as the technology leader in the field.  Ultimately, we enjoy significant advantages over GTL in Issued Patents, Pending Patents, In-Force Patents, and our Patent Win-Loss Record – and we have license agreements with the most significant carriers in our sector," said Smith. "This advantage is material and will last for the foreseeable future given our acquisitions and advanced development efforts." "When my investors (equity and debt) ask me why GTL continues to tilt at our formidable advantages in patents, my response is that I believe they have no options left and are desperate. I win business from them, I have much better technology, they refuse to take my 'Technology Bake Off Challenge,' I use my own/better people to take good care of my customers, I operate at a much higher level of integrity, my investors like what we do more and are transparent in the way we do business, and I could go on – so desperation I think on GTL's part," concluded Smith.
