EXPERT ALERTS:

Making the Most Use of Millennial Talent
Joanie B. Connell, Ph.D.
Founder
Flexible Work Solutions
"Millennials have a tremendous amount of knowledge and skills to offer. They are highly educated, know how to access information instantaneously, and have tech skills unimaginable to older generations. To optimize their potential, offer them continuous development. Stagnation is death to a millennial."
Dr. Connell is the founder of Flexible Work Solutions, a nationally recognized consulting firm that specializes in leadership assessment, development, and retention for all levels. She also serves as a university professor, teaching business and psychology students of all ages at a host of top-tier higher education institutions across the country. After decades of independent research and experience focusing on young people in the workplace, she wrote "Flying Without a Helicopter: How to Prepare Young People for Work and Life." Despite years of rigorous academic preparation, many young people are fledgling as they start their careers, and excessive parental involvement is having a detrimental impact on young employees' performance. Dr. Connell is available to discuss a variety of topics related to millennials and young people in the workplace. She is adept at teaching managers how to make the most use of millennial talent, showing parents how to equip their children for success, and guiding young professionals through their careers.

Innovating From Inside Your Organization
Jon Campbell
Strategy Principal
Continuum
"Growth is an expectation, and one that requires leaders to consistently develop new offerings and delightful customer experiences. Rather than bouncing from one initiative to another, or treating growth as a crisis to address once a year, organizations are now recognizing the value in building an internal innovation capability within their organization that can consistently drive growth. Not dissimilar from the development of marketing departments decades ago, this innovation capability 'function' will become critical and expected for companies, and one that they would be well served to develop in a deliberate manner."
Campbell is a strategy principal and member of the Service Design leadership team at Continuum, a global design innovation consultancy with studios in Boston, Los Angeles, Milan, Seoul, and Shanghai. He manages engagements that focus on identifying new growth opportunities and getting them to market to create value for organizations and their customers. As the leader of Continuum's Innovation Capability practice, he helps organizations develop their internal capabilities for driving repeatable innovation and implementing holistic customer experiences. He has worked in a range of industries including financial services, healthcare, retail and consumer packaged goods. Most recently, he was published in the Chicago Tribune and Harvard Business Review.

Driver Shortages Roil the Trucking Industry
H. Peyton Inge IV
Trucking Defense Attorney
Chamblee, Ryan, Kershaw & Anderson, P.C. in Dallas
The nation's unemployment rate continues to hover just over 5 percent, but one occupation is facing a growing demand amid a shrinking workforce. The trucking industry has a current shortfall of some 35,000 to 40,000 drivers, a figure that could grow to as many as 240,000 drivers by 2022. One result of the shortage is increased costs for shippers as carriers step up efforts to recruit and retain drivers. The shortage coincides with more stringent safety regulations and a rise in trucking-related litigation. Says Inge: "The industry is caught between the need for attracting new drivers and the need for experienced drivers. Companies are increasing pay, expanding training programs, providing signing bonuses and looking for creative ways to address driver retention and satisfaction."

Design Secret to Creating Products We Love
Kevin Young
SVP, Product Experience
Continuum
"In today's highly competitive and rapidly evolving business environment, it's commonly understood that success requires more than just designing a great product; you need to design the full product experience. To have a lasting, meaningful impact on consumers, products need to resonate with people holistically and emotionally. There is an entire experiential ecosystem that must be considered in order to create a successful product experience. But with this focus on experience creation, have we started to forget about the magic and the power of design?"
Young is available to discuss how products increasingly need to evolve and become one component of an experiential system, which often includes Internet connectivity. He is passionate about design and understands that design is a powerful tool that can be used to tap into the sensorial and subconscious triggers that make people fall in love with products and services. He has been published in TechCrunch and Entrepreneur, and has appeared on Bloomberg TV.

Understanding Your Customers in Order to Meet Their Needs
Anthony Pannozzo
SVP, Service and Experience Design
Continuum
"When employees know what their customers care about, they are fired up to meet their needs. It is amazing how often our clients think they know what is important to their customers, only to discover things are not what they seem. It's a call to action when employees learn they are not delivering what their customers need. It's key that organizations spend that time getting to know their customers and then communicate those needs to employees at all levels of the organization."
As SVP, Service and Experience Design at Continuum, Pannozzo brings passion and creativity to addressing the growth challenges of the world's leading companies. He helps organizations achieve their goals by helping them define the ideal experiences their customers demand and by identifying, validating, and envisioning new growth opportunities. He has over 20 years of experience creating value at the intersection of customer insight, technology application, and business viability. Most recently, he was featured in Work Design Magazine.

Soccer Sponsors Should Be Mindful of FCPA
Tom Fox
FCPA and Compliance Ethics Lawyer and Author
Advanced Compliance Solutions in Houston
In the days since the U.S. Department of Justice announced the indictment of more than a dozen officials of FIFA, world soccer's governing body, a light has begun to shine on soccer's global sponsors, ranging from Adidas to Coca-Cola. Says Fox: "U.S. companies that sponsored any nation's soccer team should be taking a close look at their compliance programs. The bottom line is if your company did business in any way with FIFA over the past five years, then you should prepare for the DOJ to come knocking. Also, the soccer federations of individual countries may be considered state-owned enterprises covered under FCPA's anti-bribery regulations. The Travel Act, which in some cases makes commercial bribes between private citizens illegal based on state law, also may apply. Finally, the recent BHP Billiton FCPA enforcement action related to the 2008 Olympics shows that failures of internal controls are not dependent on payments of bribes under the FCPA."

FCC Proposal Concerning Protections Against Robocalls and Texts to Wireless Phones
Alex Quilici
CEO
YouMail, Inc.
"You can write the legislation however you want, but telemarketers will obfuscate the loopholes. Because of the 1918 law, carriers are required by law to deliver every phone call that comes through the line. That law does not reflect the fact that many calls are handled outside of U.S. jurisdiction by smaller calling services. An overseas auto-dialer using a VoIP network can spoof thousands of phone numbers and make countless calls in minutes with little fear of paying a penalty under FCC rules and regulations. Auto-dialers are constantly changing numbers and area codes, making it nearly impossible to manually identify and keep track of unsolicited callers."
YouMail, Inc., is a provider of intelligent telephony and voice services that has answered over 5 billion calls and has conducted analytical research on robocalling patterns and behaviors. Quilici was formerly the vice president of AOL Voice Services, where he was instrumental in growing the unit to over 1 million paying customers. He co-founded and was the CEO of Quack.com, which was successfully sold to AOL in 2000. An industry advisor to the FCC, he is well-versed in FCC rules and regulations related to automated telephone dialing systems. He is based in Irvine, Calif.

Work Loss Associated With Relationship Problems
Michael Mulvihill
CEO
ORCAS
"Work loss associated with marital problems costs U.S. employers approximately $6.8 billion per year, due to absenteeism, reduced productivity, and increased healthcare costs. Couples in traditional or nontraditional relationships are a part of the workplace dynamic, and sometimes bring unwelcome complications to the office or factory floor. While it's long been a Fortune 500 tradition to ask executives and staff alike to 'leave your personal problems at the door,' it's unrealistic to expect that to be the case."
Mulvihill is the CEO of ORCAS, a provider of healthcare technology solutions, including the mobile app Love Every Day. A new study shows the efficacy of the app in promoting stability and resiliency in relationships, and its potential impact on employee focus and performance. Mulvihill has contributed numerous articles on health, wellness and technology to leading trade and academic publications.

Mobile and Cloud Technology No Longer an Afterthought
Dev Gandhi
CEO
moBack
"Leading companies across the globe are using mobility as a catalyst for business innovation. Enterprise mobile apps are no longer an afterthought -- they are now a strategic imperative for businesses to effectively compete in this new mobile era. Mobile apps, and the ability to quickly develop them, empower enterprises to fast-track their mobile strategy."
Gandhi is an expert in mobile development and the mobile economy, as well as technology trends as they relate to mobile. He founded Nexage, which was eventually sold to Millennial Media for $108 million. His most current venture is moBack, a new enterprise Mobile Backend-as-a-Service (MBaaS) company. One of the key products of moBack is moBack Enterprise, a self-deployable MBaaS platform that helps developers build and deploy mobile and Web apps faster and at a lower cost. With moBack's self-deployable platform, businesses now have instant access to an easy, secure and scalable backend platform to develop mobile apps, while enjoying full control and customization capabilities. Trends in Telecom, SDN/NFV, DevOps, Cloud Automation
Alex Henthorn-Iwane
VP, Marketing
QualiSystems
"Automation is steadily impacting every sector of the IT eco-system.  In telecom, the move to software-defined networks (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) are based on the move to running everything as software in datacenters that can perform an increasing percentage of telecom network functions that were only possible on dedicated, specialized hardware not so long ago. The DevOps movement that is seeking to apply lean manufacturing principles to how all IT is developed, tested and released, is predicated on high degrees of automation.  And, of course, the broad move to cloud, inclusive of public infrastructure as a service (IaaS) like Amazon Web Service (AWS), as well private clouds built on converged infrastructure hardware from the likes of Cisco, Dell, EMC, HP, NetApp, VCE and others, means that IT must become more software and automation enabled than ever before."
Henthorn-Iwane, an expert on IT automation in the realm of telecom, SDN/NFV, cloud and DevOps, is available to discuss how automation is being applied, where telecoms and enterprises are at in their evolution towards greater IT automation, their journey to DevOps, how they are handling the "bi-modal" reality of older, legacy IT infrastructure, services and applications while trying to sprint fast to the future and emulate the webscale giants like Google, Amazon and Facebook.

Automobile Software Copyright Would Undermine Code Security
Bill Rand
Assistant Professor of Marketing and Director of the Center for Complexity in Business
University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business
"The automaker appeal for intellectual property protection of software regulating emissions, steering and other control units would require owners and third-party mechanics to use manufacturer-approved diagnostic equipment to analyze and fix problems -- within manufacturer-approved limits. 'Changing the code,' automakers argue, would undermine U.S. safety and environmental standards. However, when systems are closed by copyright law or other means, there is a much bigger security threat. People can't know what the potential holes are. Conversely, if everyone is playing around with these systems, they can prevent security loopholes much quicker. Copyright law won't prevent hackers with malign intent, but it will block honest people with an interest in computer security. And companies specializing in aftermarket modifications -- a $35 billion industry -- could also be put out of business. Imagine an older car no longer meeting updated emissions standards and the manufacturer discontinuing updates to the electronic control units in that model. The only way to fix that is to hack the software."
Rand also has an appointment with UMD's Institute for Advanced Computer Studies and affiliate appointments with the departments of Decision, Operations & Information Technology and Computer Science.

A Better Way to Pay for College
Pamela Yellen
Financial Security Expert
Bank On Yourself
"The vast majority of Americans have been sorely misled, time and again, by so-called experts who preach widely accepted investing and savings methods that history has repeatedly proven simply do not deliver."
Is there a way to pay for college without spending your life savings, seeing your kids in horrendous debt, or going into debt yourself? Yellen's research led her to a little-known method that prudent, fiscally savvy Americans have used to secure their savings in every period of boom or bust for over 160 years. The New York Times best-selling author of "The Bank on Yourself Revolution: Fire Your Banker, Bypass Wall Street and Take Control of Your Own Financial Future," she is available to discuss the hidden drawbacks to 529 Plans, UGMAs and UTMAs, along with a little-known, but proven alternative.
