Plane makes emergency landing, comes to a stop near golf course

Aug 04, 2009 (The Deming Headlight - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- An experimental airplane, listed by the Federal Aviation Administration as an RV6A, crashed into a fence near the Rio Mimbres Country Club Golf Course after landing Friday morning at Deming Municipal Airport.

There were no injuries, but airplane damage was substantial.

The pilot was identified as David C. Vanlauwe, 62, of 4162 Compana Court, Las Cruces. His passenger was Elizabeth G. Vanlauwe, 61.

"It's a two-passenger aircraft," said Robert Benavidez, of Deming Aviation, "a 180-horsepower Lycoming engine." Benavidez said the engine lost power.

"Nobody has determined what caused it," he said.

The plane rolled into a fence separating the airport from the RMCC Golf Course's eighth hole, approximately 200 yards off the runway, according to a RMCC golfer.

An arrested fence landing," Benavidez said.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.

The initial report, from the New Mexico State Police, is the engine failed as the plane made its landing approach and the plane subsequently hit a fence separating the airport from the Rio Mimbres County Club Golf Course's eighth hole.

It was "an arrested fence landing," Benavidez said.

The NMSP has responsibility for aircraft crash scenes until arrival of federal officials.
