Pillsbury rolls out the dough for school

(Chattanooga Times (Free Press, TN) (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Dec. 4--IF YOU GO What: Ceremony to receive cash reward from General Mills When: Tuesday at 1 p.m.

Where: Davis Elementary School A typical trip to the grocery store turned out to be sort of special for Trenton resident Beverly Hawkins -- and Davis Elementary School.

Mrs. Hawkins' trip to Food Lion won a $50,000 General Mills sweepstakes to be donated to the school of her choice.

Mrs. Hawkins chose Davis Elementary to receive the money because she has many family ties with the school, she said.

The Pillsbury Doughboy is supposed to deliver the goods to the Sand Mountain school Tuesday.

"I am thrilled," Mrs. Hawkins said. "I could never imagine being able to do that for a school. It is great for Davis because they are a small school, and they are kind of isolated from the rest of the county."

Mrs. Hawkins' mother and sisters graduated from the school when it was a high school and Mrs. Hawkins attended the school when it was a junior high school, she said. Her son also attended Davis Elementary a few years ago.

The prize is the secondlargest ever awarded in the program, officials said.

Mrs. Hawkins was automatically entered in the sweepstakes by using her Food Lion MVP card, said Brittany Shaw with Leader Enterprises, which handles the sweepstakes.

"This is an amazing award," said Mary Skillas with Leader Enterprises. "It has not been given that often. It is a very rare thing to do."

The money will be presented to members of the school's Parent Teacher Organization in a ceremony Tuesday, said assistant principal Dottie Abercrombie.

"This money is going to make a very large impact on our students," she said.

Plans are to enhance the school's playground, concrete the walkways, add a fence and build a new pavilion. The money will also buy new books for the library and a sound system for the gym and lunchroom, Mrs. Abercrombie said.

The sweepstakes was part of the Box Tops for Education program. General Mills products, like cereal, have coupons on the package that are each worth 10 cents. Collecting the coupons translates to money for schools.
