Pennsylvania Action Coalition announces new leadership and funding to guide work to transform health care through nursingThe Pennsylvania Action Coalition today announced new leadership and funding to continue its mission to advance health in Pennsylvania through high quality, safe, and accessible nursing by implementing the recommendations from the Institute of Medicine's (IOM) report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health. The National Nursing Centers Consortium (NNCC), a Philadelphia-based nonprofit dedicated to supporting nurse-led health care, now leads the Coalition, along with Masimo, a noninvasive patient technology firm with a foundation dedicated to patient safety. NNCC is an affiliate of Public Health Management Corporation. The Coalition's Advisory Board, comprising 18 organizations representing a diverse cross-section of health care stakeholders across the state, has elected a new Executive Committee, under the leadership of Paula Milone-Nuzzo, RN, Ph.D., to implement this next phase of its work. Pennsylvania also received an additional two years of funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) to support its work. Nursing is especially important to the health of Pennsylvanians as the state has the fifth largest number of nurses, 141 nursing education programs and schools, and the most nurse-managed health centers in the nation. "Pennsylvania has always been an important state for nursing," said Tine Hansen-Turton, MGA, JD, CEO of the NNCC. "Now, as a Coalition, we are drawing upon those strengths and the incredible work of students, scholars, advocates, and leaders throughout the state around new efforts to advance the future of nursing." "Nursing is a critical component of any effort to impact health at a population level," said Michael Becker, Ph.D., RN, Chief Nursing Officer at Masimo. "When we design technologies that improve patient care, we learn from nurses how to deliver technology with real impact." The PA Action Coalition is funded in part by the RWJF Future of Nursing: State Implementation Program (SIP). This is Pennsylvania's second two-year grant from SIP, which now supports 33 state Action Coalitions through the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action. Through its partnership with PA Action Coalition, RWJF remains committed to building a Culture of Health so that everyone in America can live a healthier life, supported by a system in which nurses are essential partners in providing care and promoting health. "Funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's SIP will help the PA Action Coalition further our mission by directly supporting the recommendations that came out of the IOM's Future of Nursing Report," said Sarah Hexem, Director of the PA Action Coalition. "Pennsylvania has a phenomenal group of individuals and organizations engaged in this effort, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who is supporting our work. We look forward to doing even more to implement the IOM's recommendations here in Pennsylvania, so we can improve health care for everyone." The funding will support efforts to increase the number of nursing students enrolled in baccalaureate programs, focusing specifically on groups traditionally underrepresented in nursing, and cultivating an expectation and appreciation for nurses as leaders. In addition, the PA Action Coalition plans to create a nursing student and workforce database for the state that includes nurses in board positions and information on diversity at all levels of nursing education and the nursing workforce. Other Coalition initiatives include highlighting nurse-led efforts to improve quality of care, improving access and quality of care in rural areas, and implementing nurse residencies. The PA Action Coalition received funding to match its RWJF grant from Masimo Foundation, UPMC Health Plan, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and Geisinger Hospital System.
