Pacheco boys win two of three in holiday tourney

Jan 03, 2013 (Los Banos Enterprise (Los Banos - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Pacheco's boys basketball team has only played one league game so far (an 82-45 road loss Wednesday to Central Catholic) but has faced two league opponents.

The first came in the championship of the Orestimba Holiday Tournament Saturday, when Pacheco dropped a 68-52 decision to Patterson.

"It's always good to see league opponent before league play," Pacheco coach Tyrell Jenkins said. "Now you know what they're capable of doing and you can make adjustments. We've got two more games against them." Pacheco and Patterson will meet again Jan. 18 at Pacheco, five games into league play.

Pacheco reached the tournament title game after wins over Delhi (62-33) and Millennium (62-50 on the strength of Edgar Iglesias's 28-point performance). Pacheco's inside man Le'Andre Wright earned an all-tournament selection.

With Iglesais running the point this year, there's less opportunity for him to put up big points, allowing teammates like Wright and guard Daniel Marquez to light up the scoreboard.

"Edgar had a solid tournament," Jenkins said. "Le'Andre was all-tournament, but Edgar's starting to get his shooting touch back." Marquez added 17 during Iglesias's 28-point game, going dry from beyond the arc but hitting a few jumpers and driving into the paint plenty.

But in the WAC-opening loss to Central Catholic on Wednesday, the inside was dominated by 6-foot-9 CC senior John Fenton, who led all scorers with 30 points.

"He did some monster stuff on the boards -- he killed us on rebounds and killed us in post," Jenkins said. "He's something we never see on a regular basis." Jenkins described the defending co-champion Raiders, who went 10-2 in league a year ago along with Los Banos High, as deeper than the the year before, with more long-distance shooters to complement their towering big men.

"They did a good job defensively of keeping us on the perimeter," Jenkins said. "We had a couple in the paint over Fenton, but we know you're going to win some, but you're going to lose more than you win doing that." That said, the Panthers (8-6) weren't disappointed by their performance against the level of CC's play.

"We're encouraged because the kids fought, and going into the game that was going to mean more to us, because Central Catholic is the star of the league," Jenkins said. "You'll look real bad before you look good against them. We looked all right." Across town, the Los Banos boys (3-8) open league play tonight against Central Valley (5-8), which dropped its opener against Patterson 62-47.
