(Jiji Press English News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Tokyo, April 14 (Jiji Press)--Personal information of more than one million people may have leaked through smartphone applications, it was learned Saturday.
The applications, developed for Google Inc.'s Android operating system, have been distributed online for free of charge since mid- March, cybersecurity firm NetAgent Co. told Jiji Press.
Tokyo's Metropolitan Police Department is trying to know details of the 16 spyware types in question, other sources said.
According to NetAgent, all the spyware masquerade as applications to introduce game and movie content, such as "Where's Wally?: The Movie."
The applications, already deleted from the Internet, are designed to automatically send phone numbers and e-mail addresses from smartphones to external servers during video streaming. They are believed have been downloaded as many as 270,000 times.END
