Orange NAACP begins new chapter

ORANGE, Jun 13, 2009 (The Orange Leader - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Orange chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is officially under new leadership.

Bishop Raymond C. Young Sr. was chosen as the new president of the Orange chapter of the NAACP Friday afternoon following an election held at Greater St. Paul Christian Fellowship Church in Orange.

Young, who was the sole nominee for the president position, has served as interim president since the death of James A. Roberts in early February.

"I have some very big shoes to fill if I want to follow in the footsteps of former presidents like Velma Jeter and James Roberts," Young said following his election. "I hope to serve the community as best as I can during my time as president." Young said he has already set many goals for himself as president, but the most important is to increase membership.

"We currently have around 75 to 80 members in the Orange NAACP," Young added. "Increasing membership is going to be very important. One way I want to do that is by restarting the youth chapter of the NAACP. We need to get the young people involved because they are the future." Also elected on Friday as branch officers for the Orange NAACP are Rev. Lionel G. Hayes Jr., first vice-president; Jackie Mayfield, second vice-president; Cyminthia Rogers, secretary; Odessa Jackson, assistant secretary; and Tawana Crockett, treasurer.

Also attending Friday's election were Bob Lydia, National Board Member of the NAACP, and Linda Lydia, NAACP State Secretary.
