Optometrist focuses on family, keeps up with technology

(The Edmond Sun, Okla. Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jun. 28--EDMOND -- Chase Hunter, an optometrist, knew he wanted to go into the medical field but he was unsure which discipline to pursue.

In 2000, his then future wife underwent Lasik eye surgery. He said it made such a difference for her eye sight that he knew he wanted to be an optometrist.

"No one hates going to the eye doctor," Hunter said. "That's the only doctor you can say that about for the vast majority of people."

Hunter recently opened his own practice, Within Sight, 775 W. Covell Road. He specifically chose the location at the intersection of Covell Road and Kelly Avenue because there is not another optometrist in the area.

He graduated from the University of Missouri in St. Louis with a doctorate in optometry. There are only 19 optometry schools in the nation, and most only require their students to rotate among one or two specialties. Hunter said he was required to study six types of specialties.

"It lets me see a specialized field instead of a broad range," he said.

The optometrist has experience working for a private practice, a cataract surgeon and a Lasik surgeon.

Pacia Roberts, practice administrator for Hummel Eye Associates, said Hunter filled in for another doctor who went on maternity leave for a few months.

"He's very knowledgeable. He's caring and loving. His patients really like him," she said.

Being married to his wife, Erin, for six years and having two children, Coleman, 3, and London, 4 months, Hunter wants his practice to focus on families.

"I want to grow with my patients," he said. "I want to see them age and mature."

The waiting room includes videos for children and a train table soon will be added. Patients will be able to view educational videos on iMACs while they wait in examination rooms. Hunter said they have videos that explain Lasik eye surgery and cataracts. This ensures that the patient gets all the information and details they want and need.

"It's just a different way of doing it," Hunter said.

Within Sight offers eye exams, pediatric exams, free exams for infants under 1 and some pre testing and all post testing for Lasik surgery and cataracts.

The practice also sells a larger selection of designer frames, including Gucci, Armani and Dior.

Hunter said he has kept up with new technology. Their digital refractive system, which helps determine a patient's prescription, uses hundreds of points of light. The old technology used two points of light.

Also, many medical professionals are converting to Electronic Medical Records. Instead of carrying a patient's chart, Hunter has all the information recorded in a PC tablet that he carries.
