Opposition should return to parliament to challenge govt policy decisions: British envoy, 2-Last (Dhaka)


Dhaka, Jul 15, 2009 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) -- On terrorism, Evans noted that Britain and Bangladesh have both known the horrors of indiscriminate terrorist violence. The UK is committed to working with Bangladesh and other countries to counter this threat by building capacity to pursue extremists and address the root cause of extremism, he said.



Referring to the first UK-Bangladesh Counter-Terrorism Joint Working Group meeting in Dhaka, he said the Group mapped out areas of future cooperation in countering terrorism.

In reply to a question the High Commissioner said corruption is a real problem for Bangladesh; a problem for developing and developed countries. He said it needs to narrow the space in which the corrupt exist and media can also play antidote to corruption and make it difficult for the corrupt to make money.


Asked about the investment climate in Bangladesh, he said it needs an investment-friendly climate, protection of the investment and its fair returns. He said British investors are keen to invest in the country?s gas sector.

On the international plane, Evans said Bangladesh where democracy has recently been restored would join the international call for Burma?s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi?s release.

On recognition of Kosovo, he said Bangladesh can have a real impact by recognizing Kosovo as an independent state. Already 58 countries have recognized Kosovo?s independence and Bangladesh can be the 59th by joining them, he told the reporters.

DRU president Shamim Ahmad chaired the press meet and general secretary Pathik Saha spoke about activities of DRU. Head of the Press and Communication Robert Morini and Senior Communication Officer Nazneen Ferdousi were present.
