OpenStack® Board Elects China Unicom and FiberHome as Gold Members of the Foundation

At the OpenStack Summit Boston, the Board of Directors of the OpenStack Foundation elected China Unicom (News - Alert) and FiberHome Telecommunication Technologies as Gold Members of the Foundation. Both new Gold Members demonstrate OpenStack's strategic value for networking and large-scale service providers. Telecoms and large network operators are using OpenStack not only to build public and private clouds but also to take advantage of the strong set of Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) capabilities and ecosystem support that OpenStack offers.

China Unicom is one of the three largest telecommunications providers in China and is a global provider with implementations in 69 countries. China Unicom's Wo Cloud, based on OpenStack, provides public, private and hybrid cloud services to more than 1,400 customers, including key players in industry, healthcare and government. China Unicom is a participant in many open-source initiatives and began using OpenStack in 2010.

FiberHome (News - Alert) is a China-based, international provider of information and communication network products and solutions. A Corporate Sponsor of the OpenStack Foundation since 2015, FiberHome uses OpenStack to provide cloud communications and network integration solutions in 12 big data centers in different industries via its FitCloud product family. Among its customers, FiberHome counts China Travel Sky Holding and Hubei Province, for which FiberHome deployed the largest, province-level, e-government cloud platform in December of 2016.

"FiberHome has been contributing to OpenStack since the Mitaka release and is thrilled to take our community involvement to the next level," said Chen Gang, chief architect at FiberHome. "OpenStack has been and will contiue to be central to our growth and to furthering our goal of becoming a fully integrated information and communications technology solutions provider. We look forward to sharing our experiences and the feedback of our customers and to playing an even greater role in promoting OpenStack around the world."

"I'm excited to see FiberHome's upstream focus on fixing reported bugs and helping review patches," said Jeremy Stanley, infrastructure engineer with the OpenStack Foundation and Technical Committee member. "This is exactly the sort of helpful contribution too often overlooked by other companies early in their community involvement."

The OpenStack Foundation Board evaluates new potential members based on their strategic commitment to OpenStack and contributions to the community, as well as diversity of company size, location and industry.

"OpenStack continues to attract new members and investment around the world," said Jonathan Bryce, executive director of the OpenStack Foundation. "Both China Unicom and FiberHome have made significant contributions to the OpenStack community, and they are showing how the software is providing composable, agile infrastructure resources for a new generation of cloud-first applications."

Foundation membership is limited to eight Platinum Members and 24 Gold Members. Platinum Members are AT&T, Canonical, Huawei, IBM, Intel, Rackspace (News - Alert), Red Hat and SUSE. China Unicom and FiberHome join 21 other Gold Members, including 99Cloud, Aptira, CCAT, China Mobile, China Telecom, Cisco, City Network, Dell EMC, Deutsche Telekom, EasyStack, Ericsson, Fujitsu, H3C, Hitachi (News - Alert), Inspur, inwinSTACK, Mirantis, NEC, NetApp, UnitedStack and ZTE.

About OpenStack®

OpenStack is the most widely deployed software for public and private clouds, with more than 5 million cores in production. It has become a standard for private clouds and is also available via dozens of public cloud providers globally. At its core, OpenStack is an open source integration engine that provides APIs to orchestrate bare metal, virtual machine and container resources on a single network. The same OpenStack code powers a global network of public and private clouds backed by the largest ecosystem of technology providers, to enable cost savings, control and portability.

OpenStack is a global community of more than 73,000 individuals across 185 countries supported by the OpenStack Foundation, which facilitates the development of many innovative projects in the open infrastructure space. The community delivers two software releases each year, which are Apache 2 licensed and productized by a large ecosystem of technology vendors in our Marketplace.
