Offense scores twice in A&M-Commerce scrimmage

(Greenville Herald-Banner (Greenville, Texas) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Mar. 29--COMMERCE -- House to Quander.

That was the leading combination during Texas A&M University-Commerce's scrimmage that capped spring football training on Saturday.

Quarterback Darby House, a redshirt freshman from Skidmore-Tynan, went 13-of-23 passing for 103 yards, one interception and one touchdown as the offense went against the defense.

That touchdown pass covered 28 yards to Quander, who's a senior from Austin. Quander led all receivers with eight catches for 64 yards.

The Lion offense also picked up a 9-yard touchdown run from Jamar Mosely, plus two extra points from Juan Velasco and a 27-yard field goal from Velasco. The final score wound up 17-0. The Lions did not do a true spring game due to low numbers during the transition period with the hiring of new head coach Guy Morriss.

Defensive back Israel Hughes sparked the defense with an interception in the end zone to prevent one scoring threat.

Stephen DeGrate also forced a fumble with a sack, while Patrick Moore, William Green and Andree Smith registered sacks.

"Both sides made some plays," said Morriss. "Wished we'd have had a little nicer weather. Little chilly." Nearly 200 spectators braved wind chill in the mid to low 30s to watch the Lions at Memorial Stadium.

"We appreciate your support," said Morriss. "I hope we can see this place full next fall." The Lions open the 2009 season on Aug. 29 at Angelo State. They're scheduled to play four home games starting with a Sept. 12 game against Abilene Christian.

A&M-Commerce's offense finished with 245 yards in 61 plays.

Ricky Beatty, who alternated series with House at quarterback for the Lions, went 8-of-13 for 45 yards.

A&M-Commerce rushed for 107 yards, including a 41-yard scamper by Kasib Williams, who finished with 40 yards on two carries to lead all rushers.

Marcus Graham ran for 29 yards on four carries and James Jamison wound up with 16 yards on four carries.

Taylor Fore was the Lions' second-leading receiver with four catches for 12 yards and Maurice DuPont added two catches for 15 yards.

Also catching passes were Adorian Arthur (1-4), Kasib Williams (1-21), Blake Patton (1-0), Jamar Mosley (1-6), John Armstrong (1-2), Dakota Burch (1-2) and Adam Jones (1-22).

Morriss said the Lions kept things pretty basic in the scrimmage with a base offense and defense.

"It's hard to get a true indication of exactly where we are," he said.

Overall the Lions have had a "good spring" and have a "basic understanding" of what needs to be done, he said.

The Lions will go back to work on Monday with conditioning.

"We've got some catching up to do," said Morriss.
