Norbert "Nobby" Burton, 40, of 18 Waite St., died Thursday, Dec. 8, 2005.

Nobby was a loving and devoted husband and father. He was a hard-working man who believed in caring for his family.

He was employed with Daniel's Tree Service and was a member of Crossroads Community Church.

Surviving are his wife, Cynthia Dalton Burton of the home; a son, Shawn Carroll; two daughters, Cyndi Waters and Billie Waters; a grandson, Ja'kye Smith; and mother-in-law, Mama Brenda, all of Greenville.

Services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest, with visitation from 1 to 2:45 p.m., prior to the service, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery, West.

The family is at the residence.

Opal Lancaster Cannon

Spartanburg

Opal Doreen Lancaster Cannon, 87, of 650 Norwood St., died Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005, at Mary Black Memorial Hospital.

Born on April 7, 1918, in Spartanburg, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Alavenia Fowler Lancaster. She was the wife of the late Rev. Joel Earle Cannon, a United Methodist minister who served the SC United Methodist Conference for 47 years. A 1939 graduate of Converse College, she was a retired high school English and French teacher in various areas of the state and also a piano teacher. She was extremely active in the United Methodist Church in areas of the state that her husband served. She was a member of the Converse College Alumni Association, and a former president of the State Ministers' Wives Association of the SC United Methodist Conference.



Survivors include two daughters, Opal Catherine Cannon of Columbia and Mildred Josephine "Joey" Cannon of Spartanburg; and three sisters, Doris Lancaster Magee of Roanoke, Va., Mildred F. Lancaster and Nancy Lancaster Rooney, both of Greenwood. She was predeceased by a brother, James Overton Lancaster; and a sister, Helen Lancaster Hudgins.

Visitation will be from 7:30 to 9 p.m. tonight, Dec. 15, 2005, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, 2005, at St. Paul United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

Travelers Rest

Mrs. Vera Ellis "Aunt BiBi," 62, of 144 Belvue Road, went to be with our Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005.

Born in Greenville on Dec. 15, 1942, she was a daughter of the late Marion and Mary Frances Cheek Garrett.

She retired from Winn-Dixie, and was a member of Belvue Baptist Church, and a former member of Westwood Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband of 28 years, J.R. Ellis of the home; two daughters, Debra Gibbs and husband, Perry, of Townville, and Brenda Gillespie of the home; two sons, Cliff Culpepper of Greenville, and Randy Ellis and wife, Sharon, of Greenville; a sister, Annette Hammond (Nanny), of Greenville; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Ellis is predeceased by two daughters, Sharon Brock and Melissa Ellis; and two sisters, Mary Frances Carter (Aunt Muff) and JoAnn Waters (Aunt Jo).

A visitation and birthday celebration will be held tonight from 5 to 8 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest.

Services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Grand View Memorial Gardens.

In addition to flowers, the family requests "birthday gifts," such as pajamas or toiletries that will be donated to St. Francis Hospice and the Cancer Society, be brought to the birthday celebration.

Randall L. 'Randy' Farmer

Easley

"Randy" Farmer, 43, of Oakvaile Drive, Easley, died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

He was the son of the late Carl Cecil Farmer Jr., an employee of Big O Dodge in Greenville, S.C., and a regular blood donor at The Blood Connection.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, Peggy Robinson, and stepfather, Tommy Robinson, are a son, Justin Farmer, and a daughter, Audrey Farmer, both of Georgia; two sisters and two brothers-in-law, Kim and Sam Pate of Greenwood, and Dawn and Chad Pagan of Simpsonville; and a special friend, Lacey Moore of Easley.

Herman Eugene Gerhiser

Greenville

Herman E. Gerhiser, 82, husband of Katherine Chilcoat Gerhiser, died Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005.

Born in Paris, Texas, a son of the late Eugene and Mattie Ribble Gerhiser, he was formerly employed with Halliburton Geosource as a Geophysicist with 43 years of service, was a member of the Free Masons and was of the Presbyterian faith. Mr. Gerhiser was a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years; a son and daughter-in-law, Carl E. and Anne Gerhiser of Taylors; four grandchildren, Amy, Laura and Gene Gerhiser and Karl Burns.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005.

Eunice Smith Gossett

Eunice Smith Gossett, 78, formerly of Central, died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005, in Montgomery, Ala.

She was a native of Six Mile, and was the daughter of Homer Cornelius and Beulah Brown Smith. She retired from Clemson University in 1992, and was a member of Freedom Fellowship in Central.

She is survived by a daughter, Brenda Teal and her husband, Lt. Col. James Teal; and grandchildren, Jay and Rebecca of Montgomery, Ala.; a stepson, Garry Gossett and his wife, Irene, of Pendleton; a stepdaughter, Joyce Bolding and her husband, Sam, of Pickens; sisters, Viola Simpson of Fort Mill and Wilma Winchester of Pickens; a brother, Charles Smith and his wife, Reubenia, of Easley; a sister-in-law, Mildred Smith of Six Mile; five stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her first husband, William Charles Martin; and her second husband, Ralph Vernon Gossett; and brothers, Ralph and L.G. Smith.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 16, 2005, at 3 p.m. at Freedom Fellowship Church in Central, with burial to follow in Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Friday, prior to the service.

Mary Susan Durham Huey

Mary Susan Durham Huey, 89, widow of James Alford Huey, passed to her heavenly home Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005, at her daughter's house in Powdersville, S.C.

She was born on Nov. 29, 1916, in Oconee County, and was a daughter of the late William David and Omie Jo Burton Durham.

She was a devoted wife for 64 years, a loving mother, a dedicated homemaker, a textile worker, and servant for her Lord. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter and spouse, Ruth Huey Wilson and Lowry (Mel) Wilson; a daughter-in-law, Frances Reece Huey; five grandchildren, Lowry M. Wilson (Trip), Jimmy Alan Wilson, D'etra Melena Wilson Fitch, Allen Huey and Kim Huey English; four great-grandchildren, Brandy Wilson, Gregory Wilson, Alec Wilson and Ryan English; two brothers, Thomas Archie Durham of Belton and Jerry L. Durham of Seneca; two sisters, Annie Hudgins and Betty Jo Elliot, both of Seneca; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two sons, Jimmy A. Huey and Freddie G. Huey; five brothers, William, Edward, Charles, Frank, and Virgil Durham; and a sister, Bertha Mealor.

Funeral services will be conducted by Dr. Jim Dubose on Friday, Dec. 16, 2005, at 3 p.m. at the Gray Funeral Home Chapel in Clinton S.C., with interment at Pinelawn Memory Gardens.

Sara E. Weisner Hurley

Gray Court

Mrs. Sara Elizabeth Weisner Hurley, of 1377 Lincoln Road, Gray Court, and Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center, Laurens, died peacefully on Dec. 13, 2005.

She was married to the late George Duncan Hurley. They celebrated 65 years of marriage before his death in December 2001.

Born on Feb. 8, 1918, Mrs. Hurley grew up on the family farm in the Barksdale community of Laurens County. She was the daughter of the late Emmett Ellis and Mary Campbell Weisner.

Mrs. Hurley was also predeceased by five brothers; and three sisters. She is the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She is survived by three daughters, Kimberly and husband, Michael Hammond, Deborah H. Collins, and Sara and husband, John R. Lewis; and a son, Reginald E. Hurley, all of Gray Court.

Four grandchildren survive, Kim Dahle, Kelly Lyons, Kerry Drewski, and Aaron W. Hurley; and three great-grandsons.

In her younger years, she was employed by Olympia Knitting and Torrington Co. as an inspector. In addition to this work, she was well known locally as a caterer and baker. She was an inspired cook, winning awards for her recipes and cakes.

"Mrs. Sara" will be remembered for her wisdom and her ever-optimistic outlook and zest for life. She loved her family unconditionally and was always a supportive and positive influence in their lives. She had an unshakable faith in God, and was an active member of her church as long as her breath allowed.

Over the years she worked for and advocated re-cycling, taught craft classes, and volunteered at the Baptist Association Crisis Center. She was a member of the Needle Arts Club, a club that's purpose was to benefit community and charity needs and restoration of the landmark Watts House. In 1994, she received the Extension Service's Leadership Award for Family and Community Education.

She was an avid gardener and enjoyed trading plants and cuttings with friends. Her other pastime was genealogy. This was a longtime interest, inspired by her love of history. She was able to trace her family tree to the 1400's in Germany.

Her children wish to express deep and heartfelt appreciation to Clemie Anderson for her excellent care of Mrs. Hurley at home, and to Rosie Norman, Tammie Kelly, Antonisha Guest, and Annie McGee, her caregivers at Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center. Their loving care has been a great blessing to her family.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, at Warrior Creek Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. John T. Lee Jr. and Rev. Rusty Stockman, with burial in the church cemetery.

The pallbearers will be her nephews.

The family will be at the home of a daughter, Sara Lewis, 1434 Lincoln Road, and will receive friends Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m., prior to the service, in the church.

John 'Tommy' James Sr.

Piedmont

John Thomas "Tommy" James Sr., 60, of 11 Holcombe Road, husband of Judy Taylor James, died Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005, at Greenville Memorial Medical Center.

Born in Greenville, he was the son of Thomas Carroll and Mary Ray James of Piedmont.

A 1963 graduate of Hillcrest High School, he and his father were in business together under the name of Thomas C. James and Son. He was a member of the Hejaz Temple of the Shrine, A.A.O.N.M.S. since 1973, and served in the Shriners Hospital Guide Unit. Tommy was very involved in the South Greenville Fire District, serving on the Board of Commissioners for 18 years. He was a member of Reedy Fork Baptist Church in Moonville, and was a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served during the Vietnam War.

Surviving, in addition to his wife and parents, are a son, John Thomas James Jr. and his wife, Charlotte, of Piedmont; a sister, Dianne J. Dooley of Shelby, N.C.; and two grandchildren, Tyler and Courtney James. He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas C. James II.

Mattie B. Johnson, formerly of Washington Street, died Monday at the National Healthcare of Laurens.

Born in Laurens County, a daughter of the late Barney Woody and Alice Hunter Woody, she was a member of the Poplar Spring AME Church and was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Moses Johnson of Laurens; a son, John P. Johnson of Gray Court; three daughters, Mattie Williams, Betty Johnson of Laurens and Mary Price of Clinton; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Poplar Spring AME Church, with Rev. Robert Kennedy officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Doris Clark King, beloved and irreplaceable "Nanny", 62, of 122 Kinfolk Circle, died Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005, at her home.

Born in Powdersville, she was the daughter of Grace Susan Camp Clark of Easley and the late Elbert Clark. Mrs. King worked as a nurse and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving, in addition to her mother, are a son, Robert King and his wife, Myra, of Easley; a daughter, Janet Elaine McDonald and her husband, Keith, of Easley; six grandchildren, Katie and Kyle Brannan, Kelli, Kasey and Kailyn McDonald and Aaron King; and two great-grandchildren, Destiny and Tessa Gilliland.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Hillcrest Memorial Park, with Reverend James K. Hamilton officiating.

The body is at Robinson Funeral Home - Downtown, where the family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 p.m.

Douglas "Doug" Lancaster, 63, of 9305 Reidville Road, died Dec. 13, 2005, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

A native of Spartanburg County, son of the late Russell and Annie Sue Cooper Lancaster, he was a retired employee of Spartan Express after 25 years of service, former member of the S.C. National Guard, and was a member of Burnsview Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Janie Smith Lancaster of the home; two sons and daughter-in-law, David and Julie Lancaster of Boiling Springs and Corey Lancaster of Greer; a sister, Bobbie Owens of Greer; two grandchildren, Emily Lancaster and Hunter Lancaster; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mitchell and Earline Smith of Greer.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Wood Mortuary, conducted by Rev. Tim Huckaby, Rev. Jerry Madden, and Rev. Danny Garrett. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.

Stephen Michaud

Stephen Joseph Michaud, 49, of 1 Sawley Court, husband of Sharon Michaud, died Monday, Dec. 12, 2005, at his residence.

He was a loving husband, father, brother, and friend.

Born in Millinocket, Maine, he was the son of Lee and Alice Lynch Michaud of Millinocket, Maine.

Mr. Michaud was a retired Chief Petty Officer after 20 years with the U.S. Navy. After his retirement, he was employed with Lockheed Martin. He was of the Catholic faith.

Surviving, in addition to his wife and parents, are a daughter, Danielle Michaud of Greenville; a son, Aaron Michaud of Raleigh, N.C.; two sisters, Sherry Davis and June Pelletier; and a brother, Lee Michaud.

Louis Robert Modder

Louis Robert Modder, 84, beloved husband of Ruthe Boomker Modder, died Dec. 11, 2005.

The family will receive relatives and friends Friday evening, Dec. 16, 2005, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Mitchell Road Presbyterian Church. A celebration of life will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, at the church, where members of his Sunday school class, The Witness Class, are invited to serve as honorary escort and greeters. Military Rites and entombment will follow at Graceland East Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society, or to a charity of your choice.

Mr. Modder was born in Chicago to the late Louis and Ann Slager Modder. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II, as part of the Edsons Raiders. He was past owner of Lou Modder & Assoc. Food Brokerage of Greenville; and was a member of Kairos Prison Ministry, Pleasantburg Lions Club, and Mitchell Road Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years; a son, Bob Modder and his wife, Suzanne Stewart Modder, of Simpsonville; a daughter, Ruthejo Russell and her husband, Sonny Russell, of Greenville; three grandchildren, Jocelyn, Meredythe and Hugh Russell; two stepgrandchildren, Catherine and Margaret Stewart; two sisters and a sister-in-law, Joyce Modder Wiersma and her husband, Ken, Annamae Modder Veldman, and Esthermae Boomker Jegen and her husband, Rod, all of Chicago, Ill.; 12 nieces; and nine nephews. Predeceased was a brother-in-law, Clarence Veldman.

Mrs. Morris, wife of the late Robert Frederick Morris Jr., died Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005. Born in Honea Path, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Dr. Samuel Floyd and Julia Moffatt Donnald. She attended George Washington University and graduated from Winthrop College in 1943. She retired as an administrative assistant with the State Board of Financial Institutions. She was a member of Washington Street United Methodist Church and Circle #4.

Surviving are her sisters-in-law, Katherine R. Donnald of Honea Path, S.C., and Eloise Morris Huff of Greenville, S.C.; a brother-in-law, William Coke Morris of Anderson, S.C.; one niece; three nephews; one great-niece; and five great-nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Samuel Floyd Donnald Jr.

MaeBelle L. Morris

Easley

MaeBelle Lewis Morris, 92, of 706 Pelzer Highway, and formerly of 165 Odom Road, wife of the late Richmond Pearson "Buster" Morris, died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005, at Countryside Village.

Born in Pickens County, the daughter of the late Ernest and Nettie Lynch Lewis, Mrs. Morris retired from the textile industry and was a member of Washington Avenue Baptist Church in Greenville.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family and is survived by several loving nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Graceland Cemetery West, White Horse Road, Greenville, S.C.

Visitation will be Friday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown, prior to the service.

Family members are at their respective homes.

Larry G. Newman

Larry George Newman, 66, of 137 Newton Hill Road, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Transylvania County, he was the son of the late George J. and Lucile Thurmond Newman.

Mr. Newman was retired from Platt Saco-Lowell and was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. He was a 3rd Degree member of the Pickens Counsel 9576, and a 4th Degree member of the Seneca Assembly 1933 of the Knights of Columbus, and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.

Surviving are his wife of the home, Veronica Wilson Newman; two daughters, Laurie Newman of Liberty and Christina Joan Newman of Pickens; two sons, Larry Joseph Newman and wife, Laura, of Easley, and James Malachi Newman of the home; two grandchildren, Anthony Joseph Newman and Mikayla Ann Peters; and two sisters, Barbara Snelson and husband, Pete, and Margaret Cater and husband, Roger, all of Pickens.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Newman was predeceased by a daughter, Anastasia Newman; and a brother, Marion Richard Newman.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, 2005, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, with burial in Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens.

The Rosary will be held this evening starting at 6 p.m., with a visitation to follow until 8 p.m. at the church.

Thomas Steve Raines, 70, of 1710 Georgia Road, husband of Mary Griffin Raines, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005, at his home.

Born in Laurens County, he was a son of the late Thomas W. and Grace Tumblin Raines. Mr. Raines was a U.S. Navy veteran of Vietnam, founder of Palmetto Party Center, and retired from Webster Oil Co. of Greenville. He was a member of Renfrew Baptist Church of Travelers Rest and was a Shriner.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons, Brian Patrick Raines of the home, Thomas S. Raines Jr., William Craig Raines, and Toby Eugene Raines, all of Greenville County; daughters, Kathy Marler and Karen Wilson, both of Laurens; a stepson, Steven Weathers of Laurens; a brother, Stanley Raines and wife, Sylvia, of Travelers Rest; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, 2005, at The Kennedy Mortuary, conducted by Rev. Dan Compton.

The family will be at the home of a daughter, 562 Lakeview Drive, and will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m., before the service, at The Kennedy Mortuary.

Howard P. Roudebush

Easley

Howard Phillip Roudebush, 84, of the Clinton Presbyterian Home, and formerly of Foothills Presbyterian Home, died Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005, at Laurens County Hospital.

Born in Princeton, Ill., Mr. Roudebush was a son of the late Delino and Clarissa Diane White Roudebush. He received his Masters Degree from Oklahoma A&M in 1953. He retired as a Master Sgt. with the U.S. Air Force after 23 years of service, having served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. Mr. Roudebush then worked for the National Weather Service for 30 years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of the VFW, DAV and the American Meteorological Society, and was a member of Easley Presbyterian Church, where he was a former choir member.

Surviving are a son, Tony Roudebush and his wife, Brenda, of Joliet, Ill.; a stepson, James Everett Mumby and his wife, Sue, of Ridgefield, Conn.; a stepdaughter, Jean Suzanne Reiter and her husband, Karl, of Oakdale, Minn.; a brother, Harold E. Roudebush and his wife, Constance, of Indianapolis, Ind.; two grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Betty Williams Roudebush; and his second wife of 30 years, Helen Elizabeth (Mumby) Roudebush.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown, where the family will receive friends immediately following the service. Entombment will be in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Easley Presbyterian Church, 200 South First St., Easley, SC 29640; or to the World War II Veterans Memorial Fund, 900 Ohio Drive SW, Washington, DC 20024.

Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown is assisting the family with arrangements.
