Obama leads in latest polls in Mich. and Wis.

(AP Online Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) MICHIGAN

THE POLL: The Wall Street Journal and the Web site of The Washington Post poll, presidential race in Michigan (17 electoral votes).

THE NUMBERS: Barack Obama, 54 percent, John McCain, 38 percent.

OF INTEREST: Earlier this month, McCain announced he was pulling staff and advertising out of the traditionally Democratic Michigan, ceding the state to Obama. The new poll, conducted after that announcement, shows Obama leading. A Quinnipiac poll of 1,364 likely Michigan voters in September showed Obama apparently leading McCain 48 percent to 44 percent. That poll's margin of sampling error was plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.

DETAILS: Latest poll conducted Oct. 8-12. It included telephone interviews with 1,043 likely Michigan voters and has a sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

WISCONSIN

THE POLL: Quinnipiac University telephone poll of 1,081 randomly selected likely voters in Wisconsin before last week's presidential debate, and 1,201 after the debate (10 electoral votes.)

THE NUMBERS: Barack Obama 51 percent, John McCain 43 percent before the debate. Obama 54 percent, McCain 37 percent after the debate.

OF INTEREST: This pair of polls shows a dramatic post-debate bump for Obama in Wisconsin where his 17-point lead is the largest any poll has shown for him in the state. It comes on the heels of another independent poll released last week that showed Obama ahead by 10 points in Wisconsin. Particularly troubling for McCain is that Obama leads among independent voters, who were expected to determine the outcome of the race in this hotly contested state, 52 percent to 36 percent. The flailing national economy is also benefiting Obama with 55 percent of those polled saying it is the biggest issue in the race. And a majority say Obama is better able to deal with it _ 53 percent to 32 percent.

DETAILS: The Quinnipiac University poll, taken for The Wall Street Journal and washingtonpost.com, was conducted Oct. 3-7. The pre-debate poll has a 3-point margin of error, while the post-debate poll's margin of error is 2.8 percent.
