O-State baseball rides pitching to sweep


Apr 15, 2011 (The Daily Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Ken Smith threw a five-hitter Thursday to lead Oneonta State to a 7-2 SUNY Athletic Conference baseball victory over Plattsburgh that set up a doubleheader sweep for the visiting Red Dragons.



Joshua Herzenberg followed with 8 2/3 innings of solid pitching in the second game as O-State won, 5-1, to improve to 17-8 overall and 10-1 in the SUNYAC.

Both pitchers remained undefeated this season as Smith moved to 4-0 and Herzenberg went to 5-0. Herzenberg allowed a run in the seventh inning of the second game, snapping a streak of 22 2/3 scoreless innings pitched.


Catcher Bryan Marotta and Oneonta High graduate Jon Wolfanger had three hits apiece in the second game. Marotta scored twice and Wolfanger had two runs and an RBI.

In the first game, Smith settled down after giving up two runs in the first, which put Oneonta in a 2-1 hole.

The Red Dragons chased the Plattsburgh starter Tyler Greene in the fourth inning, when they scored three runs for the final margin.

Kevin Knack went 3-for-4 with a pair of triples, three runs and two RBIs. Marotta finished 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.

Oneonta visits Keystone for a non-conference game at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Cobleskill swept Danny O'Brien struck out three and walked three in an eight-hitter, but SUNY Cobleskill lost the opener of a North Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader, 2-1.

The Fighting Tigers (4-14, 2-8) then struck out 12 times and had three hits in the nightcap, a 2-0 loss. SUNYIT (17-11 overall) improved to 8-2 in the NEAC.

MEN'S LACROSSE Broome 22, Delhi 9 Matt Siracusa scored twice to lead SUNY Delhi, which lost a non-conference game to visiting Broome (5-5). A.J. Desimone contributed a goal and two assists for the Broncos (3-7), who are at Monroe at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Autumn Ackermann had two of Cobleskill's five hits in the second game, a 16-2 loss to visiting Hamilton (5-14).

The Fighting Tigers are 0-16 this season.

EMPIRE 8 Houghton to join in 2012 Houghton College in Rochester will join the Empire 8 Conference -- the home of Hartwick College -- in the 2012-13 academic year.

An NAIA institution, Houghton is in the process of applying for NCAA Division III membership. If accepted, one year of exploratory membership and four years of provisional membership will follow.

The Highlanders will compete in the E8 in 2012-13 but will not be eligible for conference championships until they become an active NCAA Division III member.

Houghton will play league foes in baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's track and field and volleyball.

Alfred University, Elmira, Ithaca, Nazareth, Rochester Institute of Technology, St. John Fisher, Stevens Institute of Technology (N.J.) and Utica also compete in the E8.
