Northwestern Lehigh hosting recycling event

Jan 03, 2013 (The Morning Call (Allentown - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Northwestern Lehigh High School's chapter of SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) will host an electronics recycling event from 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 19 in the school parking lot.

A state law taking effect this month mandates electronics be recycled in order to keep them out of landfills, where they can leach dangerous chemicals. Recycling is the only option for people who want to discard old televisions, computers and the like. Sanitation companies will no longer pick them up curbside.

Items that can be recycled free of charge at the event include: -- Telephones, televisions, gaming systems, cell phones, desktop and laptop computers, DVD players and VCRs, LCD and CRT monitors, projectors, stereos and speakers, cables and cords, printers, fax machines and copiers.

-- Also: smart boards, keyboards and mice, cartridges for copiers, scanners and printers, UPS battery backups, laptop batteries, audio visual equipment, calculators, adding machines, microwaves and more.

-- Items that can be recycled for a fee include: refrigerators ($30), floor freezers ($30), air conditioners ($20), dehumidifiers ($20), washers, dryers and dishwashers ($10 each), car batteries ($5) and small sealed lead acid batteries ($3).

-- Offsite computer hard drive destruction will be provided for $10 per drive. Offsite document shredding will cost $10 per standard paper size box.

The event is free, but monetary donations will be accepted to support SADD.

The school is at 6493 Route 309, New Tripoli. For more information on recyclable goods, call Responsible Recycling Services: 484-641-5156.
