Northwest students create Mozingo golf app [St. Joseph News-Press, Mo. :: ](St. Joseph News-Press (MO) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) April 19--Perhaps more than those who play any other sport, golfers are always on the lookout for new tools to upgrade their game. Students at Northwest Missouri State University have collaborated with the city of Maryville to develop an iPhone application for Mozingo Lake Golf Course in Maryville. Kyle Easter, golf pro at Mozingo, said the app will provide tools like a GPS range finder, the ability to order food from the clubhouse, reservation capabilities and advertising for local businesses and services. "Basically, we're always looking for ways that we can partner with the city and Northwest," Mr. Easter said. "Anything we can do together is a good deal. I think this is another amenity that we can offer. We already have great value to our rounds up here." Sarah Park, a librarian and adjunct faculty member at Northwest, has worked this spring with the five graduate students who are developing the app. The group started last fall on the project under the direction of another professor, Dr. Na Li. Such projects take the place of a traditional thesis in the applied computer science program. In addition to the Mozingo app, one is in the works for the St. Joseph Mustangs baseball team and others have been developed for a variety of other groups. "This is a great opportunity for students to actually develop for the client," Ms. Park said. "Our clients have the vision to connect various activities at the golf course for users, and our goal was to translate their vision into a reality by developing an iPhone app." The class will submit the new app to the iPhone store before the spring trimester ends so the group will have time to make any small tweaks that are requested before it can be released to the public. While the app will initially only be available on iPhones, Ms. Park said the class has the capability to develop something similar for Android or other operating systems if desired.
