Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) Regains Control of the Network and Optimizes It Budget

PARIS --(Business Wire)--

The global mobile broadband specialist NSN, headquartered in Finland with employees in 120 countries, regained control of its network and optimized its IT budget implementing global application performance visibility and control based on Ipanema Technologies.

From its creation in 2008, Nokia's (News - Alert) subsidiary went through a series of external acquisitions resulting in soaring IT complexity and operational costs. End of 2011, the company decided to refocus on mobile broadband equipment, cut down its workforce by more than 20% and reduce its OPEX (News - Alert) by $1.35 billion by end of 2013.

Dealing with a network clogged by new usages, NSN's IT challenge was to protect business applications and manage increasing traffic demand with existing network resources and budget.

The company was able to achieve this goal by:

  • Implementing global WAN Governance as a business-driven approach;
  • Driving the network from corporate objectives to protect business apps;
  • Dynamically managing existing hybrid MPLS + Internet resources to optimize cost.

NSN lacked of global and proactive mechanism offering visibility and control of application performance. Simultaneously, new usages such as cloud services, R&D applications, Mergers and Acuisitions were increasing traffic demand.

"The Ipanema (News - Alert) solution allows NSN to easily adapt to IT changes without worrying about critical applications' performance," explains Alain Wauters, Head of IT Networks with NSN. "It was essential for us to regain control of applications running over the network. Last but not least, we have avoided additional IT spending on bandwidth increase to support new usages because we make the most of hybrid networks (MPLS+internet). We are now in full alignment with the strategic corporate goals set two years ago and more able to support the business.
