No worries here about doomsday prediction

Dec 21, 2012 (The Garden City Telegram - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- If the prediction that the world will end today is true, no one will be reading this.

If we're all still here, it means there was never really anything to worry about, which seemed to be the consensus in Garden City when asked Thursday what they thought of the prediction that the end of the Mayans' long-count calendar at midnight would usher in the end of the world.

Doug Harder, co-owner of the Paraclete Group and Patrick Dugan's Coffeehouse, said, "If they (the Mayans) are so smart, where did they go " Harder said he received an email, making light of the end of existence, in which the similarities between the Mayan calendar and an Oreo cookie were compared.

"Since there's such a big concern about the end of the world, the email says, 'According to the Mayan calendar, the world's ending tomorrow According to Oreo Cookie, we're not supposed to worry,'" Harder said, laughing.

Kristi Nelson, who was surfing the web at the coffee shop planning for her upcoming wedding, said that from her experience, the end of 12-year calendars have yet to coincide with the end of existence.

"Your cell phone has a certain time where it stops, where it runs out of days on it, so you get a new one. You're not going to die tomorrow because your calendar in your phone did," Nelson said, adding that just because the Mayan calendar essentially stops on Dec. 21, 2012, doesn't mean the world is going to end.

Nelson is confident enough in her belief that her wedding is planned for Dec. 29.

"We're never going to know when the world ends, so I'm not worried. I think it's kind of like the Y2K thing. Everybody freaked out, but we're still here," she said. "Actually, I am going to be back here tomorrow. See, that's my plan, to be back here with a friend drinking coffee." Logan Walker, bartender at Four Winds Bar and Grill, had the same thoughts about it.

"I survived the year 2000. I survived every other apocalyptic ending that was supposed to have happened since then, and I'm going to survive tomorrow," he said, laughing.

Avis Gibbons, co-owner of Four Winds, said that they have actually planned a survivor's party for Saturday.

"We decided that if the world does end, we won't be out anything by planning a party. We just won't have a party," Gibbons said, laughing.

Cassandra Rucker, waitress at Four Winds, said she predicts that people will be pretty excited tomorrow, celebrating the fact that the world hasn't ended. If not, there isn't much anyone can do about it anyway.

"Let it happen. It's not like we're going to notice if it's gone afterwards, anyway. We're not going to be able to give any feedback on that," Rucker said.

In response to a Facebook post that asked if people were planning to call in sick on Friday, Heather Duncan, Garden City, said, "I thought about not going in, but I decided if the sun rises in the a.m., I'm going to work. It will be later though. I start work at 5 a.m., and if I don't go to work at all, and it doesn't end, I will miss out on my holiday pay for the 24th and 25th...lol." Matt Connell, Garden City, said there was no need to call in Thursday, the eve of 12/21/12. since he is a teacher and classes were canceled because of snow anyway, adding, "If by chance, the world is still here in January, USD 457 will expect me to continue teaching..lol."
