Nextplus, Free Text Messaging and Calling Over Wi-Fi, Now Available Globally

textPlus today announced the global availability of Nextplus, its next generation app that allows users around the world to send and receive low- to no-cost calls, texts and multimedia messages from any Wi-Fi-connected device, eliminating the need for a traditional carrier plan.

As a Wi-Fi-first mobile telecom service, Nextplus provides mobile users a contract-free alternative to traditional mobile carrier services that works independently of fees and contracts and isn't tied to a single device. By using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) on Wi-Fi networks, Nextplus can function independently or in conjunction with a 3G or 4G mobile plan. As the availability of Wi-Fi around the world continues to grow, Nextplus offers global users the flexibility and freedom to set their own mobile terms.

"Wi-Fi is already spreading to all corners of the world, and with companies like SpaceX and Google (News - Alert) announcing plans to make the technology virtually ubiquitous over the next few years, we knew it was time to make Nextplus globally accessible," said textPlus co-founder and CEO Scott Lahman. "Throughout the world, traditional carrier plans are very restrictive, and consumers are looking for affordable alternatives that don't restrict them to a single device. By allwing users to essentially download their phone, Nextplus is ushering in a whole new era of global mobile communication."

Nextplus users are assigned a unique dedicated phone number, which they can use to call and message anyone in or outside the app. Nextplus can be downloaded at app stores worldwide and is available on iOS, Android (News - Alert), devices including iPod touch and on various tablets.

Additionally, textPlus has recently made improvements to its platform in order to offer high-quality voice calling. Using the Nextplus app, voice callers are experiencing a large jump in quality and reliability over the textPlus app and traditional phone lines. The voice team leveraged a number of open source software solutions to provide a level of quality that traditional commercial offerings cannot.

"When you speak with someone on Nextplus, they sound like they are right in the room with you," added Lahman. "We beacon signal and media quality to continually improve the call while you're talking. It creates a connection with that person that is unlike anything you'll experience over a traditional cellphone line."

The Nextplus app also includes a rich set of multimedia features including animated GIFs, stickers, emoticons, delivery notifications, online user status and more. Through the app, users can also assign their own custom avatar and animated GIF for a more expressive messaging experience. To ensure messages are never missed, Nextplus users can receive push notifications and because it is cloud-based, users can read and respond to texts on any of their devices at any time.
