New York Marina Goes Wireless with Firetide Infrastructure Mesh and Access Network

May 09, 2009 (Close-Up Media via COMTEX) -- Utilizing the same advanced technology as Canada's second largest commercial fishing port, New York's family-owned Treadwell Bay Marina and Resort recently became a fully wireless-enabled enterprise, reports Firetide, a provider of wireless infrastructure mesh networks.

Using a Firetide infrastructure mesh network, deployed by New York-based IP network solution provider Wells Communications, the family operation said it now owns a cost-effective, yet industrial-grade, wireless infrastructure for more efficient business operations, public Wi-Fi and video surveillance over a single network.

Located in Plattsburgh, New York among the Adirondack Mountains and on the banks of historical Lake Champlain, Treadwell Bay Marina plays host to American and Canadian vacationers and sailing enthusiasts.

"Many of our boaters are executives and business owners from the New England area, as well as tech-savvy Montreal and Toronto. To attract new guests and keep top-flight members happy, we needed to provide constant connectivity. These days, even vacation demands e-mail and the Internet," said Gary Titherington, owner of Treadwell Bay Marina.

With more than 400 boat slips and the ability to dock boats measuring up to a staggering 55 feet in length, the marina covers approximately 100 total acres. Tasked with providing public Wi-Fi access, yet challenged with vast property coverage and a difficult environment of tall trees, metal masts and, obviously, water, Treadwell Bay was faced with the "perfect storm," leading them to turn to Firetide.

"From an integration standpoint, hardwiring was virtually impossible. In fact, a wired solution was never an option," explained Maureen Carlo, Communications Consultant of Wells Communications' Plattsburgh office. "Treadwell Bay originally had hot spots through its cable provider, but that was a very cumbersome process and just didn't work as needed. We proposed Firetide for this project, as only their mesh could provide multiple application support and enough bandwidth to support a video surveillance component." Treadwell Bay Marina is comprised of a restaurant, a gas dock, ship store, swimming pool, critical weather equipment and sewage-pump facilities, all within a short distance of the water. Additionally, the ranks of its eight-member, year-round staff swells during the summer boating season with young college students seeking part-time work.

To monitor and protect resources, as well as the safety of its guests and their boats, Treadwell Bay deployed 13 Panasonic IP surveillance cameras linked via five Firetide wireless mesh nodes - all over the same network providing guests with Wi-Fi. OnSSI video management software records, stores and provides viewing of the surveillance video feeds.

Owners quickly realized that the deployed mesh network was robust enough to support not only video and Wi-Fi, but also business-critical data transmission. Remote point-of-sale capabilities have been recently added, allowing communication between buildings up to 100 yards apart. For instance, the gas dock is able to operate wirelessly with the ship store on the main campus. This inherent scalability allows the marina to maximize return on investment by fully utilizing the cost-effective systems.

"We've enjoyed working with Treadwell Bay Marina and Wells Communications," said Bo Larsson, chief executive officer at Firetide. "They've clearly demonstrated Firetide's cost-effective one-stop-shop capabilities." ((Comments on this story may be sent to newsdesk@closeupmedia.com))
