Nepal journalists ask judicial probe into past assaults
Kathmandu, Oct 21, 2008 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) --
Journalists in Nepal have asked the government to conduct judicial probe into several alleged assaults on scribes working in the country during decade-long armed struggle by Maoist and other groups.
The Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) submitted a 15-point demand to Communication Minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara seeking judicial inquiry into series of assaults, including abduction, beating and torture by Maoist and other armed groups faced by journalists in the past.
The demand also included compensation for the family members of those scribes who were killed during the period.
FNJ president Dharmendra Jha met the Maoist Minister and handed over the demands. The Federation has asked security for journalists and their families and to declare the victims as martyrs.
Reinstatement of those expelled form government and private media organisations, enforcement of working journalists Act and ensuring social security, insurance and medical treatment are also included in their demand.
A large number of journalists were sacked from government media recently after the Maoists took charge of Ministry of Information and Communication.
Mahara assured the journalists that he would take immediate decisions on implementation of working journalists Act and providing relief for the victims' family members.
