National Public Safety Service Launches New Citizen Website

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., Feb. 26, 2013 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Smart911 announced today that their national website, Smart911.com, has gotten a facelift and is celebrating with the unique "Be the Face of Smart911" online contest which aims to represent Smart911 users all across the country. Smart911 is a national public safety service which allows citizens to create a Safety Profile at www.smart911.com with information about their household they want 9-1-1 to have during an emergency call; details a dispatcher can quickly send to responders in the field for fast, more effective service.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130220/MM63735LOGO) The new www.smart911.com features additions such as a community page where users can engage through the Smart911 blog and a new Safety Zone offering tips and resources for a Safe Home and Safe Family. Other enhancements include an improved registration process, as well as content added as a direct result of requests by users to interact more directly with public safety agencies and for preparedness resources.

"We receive valuable feedback from both public safety officials and our Smart911 users daily," said Tom Axbey, president and CEO, Rave Mobile Safety. "We've learned that those who create their Safety Profile are not only helping protect their families but also want to learn more about public safety, and public safety is looking to learn more about the communities they serve. Our new community page will provide the resources to help facilitate communication between these two groups." As part of the new launch, Smart911 is holding a contest to "Be the Face of Smart911." Registered users who submit photos can win a chance to be featured on the homepage and inspire others across the country to create their Safety Profile to better protect their family. To participate, citizens simply submit a photo and brief explanation of why they created their Safety Profile, now through March 22 at 5:00 pm EST. A team of judges will then select 20 finalists for an online public vote. Four winners will receive prizes, a donation to the charity of their choice, and be featured on the home page of Smart911.com and in national marketing materials. For full details and eligibility visit www.smart911.com/photocontest.php "Implementing Smart911 for our community has been one of the best decisions I have made," said Maureen Will, director of communications for Newtown, CT, which announced Smart911 service in October of 2012. "We are excited about the new additions to the website and are encouraging all residents to not only create their Safety Profile but also participate in the photo contest. I would be proud to have a Newtown family represented to citizens all across the country on smart911.com." A Safety Profile can include data about an individual, family, a residence, even pets, ranging from details on medical conditions, disabilities and special needs to home addresses associated with mobile phones, utilities, emergency contacts and more. As a result, fire crews can be aware of such things as how many people live at a home and the location of bedrooms and gas valves. EMS can know about specific conditions for fast, precise medical treatment. And because profiles can contain photos, in the event of a missing child, police can gain an advantage, receiving critical information in seconds versus hours.

"Smart911 provides a valuable service to members of our communities by facilitating better communication with 9-1-1," said Donna DeStefano of the Tennessee Disability Coalition. "Our members create a Safety Profile for many reasons; maybe it is out of concern for themselves, their children, another family member with disabilities, a senior parent, or their pet or service animal. Sometimes it is just to provide additional location information. Now, they not only have the chance to win prizes and become 'the face' of this vital service, more importantly, they can inspire someone else to create a Safety Profile and better protect themselves and their family. We encourage not only our community, but also the Smart911 community to take a moment, share their reasons, and help increase public safety across the country." Smart911 is available in 29 states and more than 350 municipalities, protecting millions across the U.S. The service has received many honors, including the "Parent Tested Parent Approved Winner's Seal of Approval" from North America's largest volunteer parent testing community. Each Smart911 Safety Profile is private, secure and only available to 9-1-1 call takers during an emergency call. Because it is a national system, a Safety Profile can be delivered with an emergency call in any area of the country if the local 9-1-1 call center is supported by the service.
