National Express East Coast: The Invisible Wireless Wonder Now Arrived
At York Station
(M2 PressWIRE Via Acquire Media NewsEdge)
RDATE:13062008
The latest arrival at York station is invisible, doesn't cost a penny -
and is set to make communications easier for millions of travellers
every year.
Train operator and station manager National Express East Coast has
introduced free wireless internet across most of the station, which is
used by more than 10 million rail passengers a year.
When combined with the free Wi-Fi already available on all National
Express East Coast trains, the move means travellers on the East Coast
Main Line can stay connected from the moment they enter the station
until they reach their destination.
Steve Soards, station manager for National Express East Coast at York,
said: "A major advantage of choosing the train over alternatives such
as driving or flying is the ability to stay connected to the internet
throughout the journey.
"For business passengers our Wi-Fi creates a productive mobile office,
with the ability to send and receive emails as well as to access the
internet. Staying online throughout a journey can mean the difference
between clinching a deal or losing out.
"Leisure travellers also benefit from our Wi-Fi, as an instant
information resource covering everything from latest news and sport to
travel and holiday information".
The free Wi-Fi zone within York station covers the main concourse,
including the waiting rooms and cafes, and platforms 1 to 5. Passengers
can access the service by logging on to the network "nxecwifi_YORK".
National Express East Coast introduced free Wi-Fi for all passengers
throughout Standard as well as First Class on its trains from day one
of its seven-year franchise on 9 December 2007. Usage increased
four-fold in the first month alone.
Note to editors:
The wireless network covering much of York station has been provided by
Cityspace Limited on behalf of National Express East Coast, which
manages the station.
As with the Wi-Fi service on National Express East Coast trains, the
wireless internet connection is provided by Icomera.
