Myrtle Beach lawmaker Thad Viers tweets Valentine's Day tips

Feb 15, 2012 (The Sun News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- State Rep. Thad Viers doesn't have a date for Valentine's Day. Instead, he's gone to Twitter to share his tips for a successful Valentine's Day.

"It started last night, I guess, because some of my emails have been leaked to Fitz News," he said. "Some things I wrote to my ex-girlfriend. A friend of mine asked me if I could help him write a letter to his girlfriend. From there the light bulb turned on. I thought it would be funny to share that experience on Twitter." The joke turned into a list of tweets that included: "#4 THE CARD. Don't Be Gay! Who wants a card with fairies & cupids? Humor wks. Funny is sexy. Simple note-expresses love=winning!" Viers, who is facing charges he harassed his former girlfriend, said he means it too.

"No girl wants a stupid card with fairies and hearts on it," he said. "Big freaking deal. I mean honestly you should be sending her cards all year round, not just on Valentine's Day." The tweets by the S.C. lawmaker who withdrew his bid for the 7th Congressional District last month after his arrest have exploded on the internet. News agencies like Huffington Post caught wind of the Twitter feed. Viers said the response is a surprise.

"Actually, it's pretty unbelievable," he said Tuesday. "I've probably picked up 100 followers on Twitter alone today. I've got some very racy messages from females that are very complimentary. It's kind of weird because I'm not into the cyber dating thing. I'm kind of old school." He said some guys have asked him to keep the tips coming because they're taking notes.

Viers isn't concerned with offending anyone with his tips.

"I'm the most politically incorrect person there is, so I don't care," he said. "That's what the great first amendment is for." He said the tweets are jokes, but the advice is sincere.

"I was in a four-year relationship and my heart was broken," he said. "I wanted to do something that would hopefully bring some smiles to people's faces. I'm just trying to help." Vier's is even taking his own advice.

In one tweet, he said first dates on Valentine's Day are for losers.

"I am now single and I have to live by the Thad Viers rules on Valentine's Day which means I'm not going on a date tonight," he said. "I'm smoking a cigar and having a drink." Viers was arrested and released by Myrtle Beach police on a $5,000 bond in January after being charged with first-degree harassment, police said.

According to police the charges against the 33-year-old stemmed from a report filed by his ex-girlfriend.

It was the second arrest for Viers, who pleaded no contest in 2006 and was fined $500 for harassing his ex-wife's boyfriend on charges he left a series of threatening and graphic phone messages on the answering machine of Columbia resident James "Jon" Zeigler.

In the most recent incident, the woman told police she broke off her relationship with Viers in June or July, but he continued to call, text, email and show up at her home and work repeatedly, according to the police report.

According to the police report, the woman had asked Viers to stop harassing her multiple times.
