MeadWestvaco Corp. announced that Navajo Manufacturing Co., Inc. has selected MWV as its sustainable packaging partner for hottips!, a new, eco friendly cell phone charging system.
According to a release, Navajo Manufacturing, which creates merchandising programs and branded products, chose MWV's Natralock security packaging for its environmental benefits, impactful graphics and design.
hottips! is launching at the 2009 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week. The product and package already received a CES award for environment friendly design. hottips! all-in-one charger was selected as an honoree for the prestigious Innovations 2009 Design and Engineering Award in the Eco-Design product category by the Consumer Electronics Association. hottips! products is on display at both MWV's and Navajo Manufacturing's booths at CES.
"We created hottips! to be an eco-friendly solution for consumers who try to make environmentally conscious purchasing decisions and who don't want their used electronics to end up in landfills," said Bob Donegan, CEO of Navajo Manufacturing. "MWV's Natralock compliments hottips! perfectly: it uses two-thirds less packaging materials than clamshell packaging, is made from renewable resources, requires fewer chemicals and less energy to produce, and it is recyclable. Natralock is also more efficient for our supply chain, looks better on shelf and is easier for consumers to open than plastic clamshells."
According to the companies, the hottips! charging system is an eco friendly product line that can last the lifespan of several mobile phones. Removable connector tips can be replaced to adapt the charger to fit 94 percent of cell phones. The unique, all-in-one charger features car, fold-away wall, 9v emergency and USB charging options, eliminating the need for multiple chargers in a consumer's home, car, briefcase or purse. hottips! is also RoHS compliant, as it does not contain any lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), or polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE), all chemicals that are known to be dangerous to the environment.
Natralock's slim design is made from a proprietary, tear-resistant paperboard that helps to reduce weight without compromising the strength or security of the package, thus reducing transportation and shipping costs. Natralock packaging incorporates a clear plastic APET or RPET bubble, and uses 60 percent less plastic on average than petroleum-based clamshells. During manufacture, Natralock seals up to 60 percent faster on average than clamshells, uses less energy during production and can be run on existing sealing machinery, making the conversion from clamshells quick, easy and inexpensive.
