Mitsui Takes Stake in Agrakom, Indonesia's Leading Digital Provider
(JCN News Headlines Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Tokyo, Apr 27, 2006 - (JCN) - Mitsui & Co. has invested US$750,000 to take 11.11% of Indonesia's leading internet portal, PT Agranet Multicitra Siberkom, or 'Agrakom'. In a deal announced on April 22, Agrakom also agreed to adopt the content delivery platform of Buongiorno Vitaminic SpA, Mitsui's strategic partner in overseas mobile services operations.
Agrakom's news-focused internet portal service, in operation since 1998 under the brand 'Detik', currently occupies the No. 1 spot in Indonesia with 4 million page views per day. Agrakom has been in the rapidly expanding cell-phone business since 2002, leveraging its customer base and delivery experience, and has positioned itself apart from other content providers as entertainment content aggregator.
Indonesia, with the world's fourth largest population of 230 million, is forecast to experience rapid growth in the spread of mobile phones in the next few years. The country's mobile content services market is also predicted to expand from US$109m in 2005 to US$390m in 2008.
The content delivery platform Agrakom is to adopt will be delivered and installed by Buongiorno (Hong Kong) Ltd, a joint venture established in November 2005 with capital of US$7.6m, 51% of which is held by Mitsui and 49% by Buongiorno Vitaminic. With this, Buongiorno HK will add operations in Indonesia to the installations achieved last year Russia, India and Thailand.
