Semiconductor supplier Mindspeed Technologies Inc. announced a partnership with Legerity Inc., a voice interface system provider in order to offer carrier-class VoIP solutions for carrier and broadband digital access equipment. The companies say the combined products will "address the complete VoIP processing path with best-in-class voice quality, diagnostics and worldwide programmability, while maintaining low total system cost and accelerating system development time."

"Mindspeed is excited to be working closely with Legerity to provide our customers with the most complete and competitive access network solutions available worldwide," said Preet Virk, vice president of marketing for Mindspeed. "Legerity's industry-leading advanced voice interface solutions and extensive market experience, combined with Mindspeed's carrier-class Comcerto voice processor products, provides access equipment manufacturers a clear best-in-class choice for VoIP solutions."

Mindspeed's Comcerto processor architecture integrates DSP cores and a packet-processing engine with streaming packet interfaces. "The Mindspeed and Legerity relationship enables customers to develop VoIP products faster and more cost-effectively," said Mike Stibila, vice president of marketing and applications for Legerity. "In today's extremely competitive world, development cost and time are king. Together, we offer the market a very low price point while providing the most advanced features and diagnostic packages available."

The Legerity VoiceEdge VE790 Series provides chip set systems available to carrier and commercial-class voice telephony apps by providing carrier-class line testing, parametric programmability for worldwide operation, and pin-compatible subscriber line interface circuits (SLICs). In consumer applications, Legerity's Ve880 VoicePort devices integrate the complete telephone line interface in a single device from the high-voltage subscriber line to the digital port of a Comcerto processor.

The new partnership will enable Mindspeed and Legerity to offer systems from two to greater than 64 ports of copper POTS-to-Ethernet VoIP, targeting both carrier and broadband access equipment apps including combined voice and data routers, as well as IP-based digital subscriber line access multiplexers (IP-DSLAMs), multi-service access nodes, next-generation digital loop carriers (DLCs), and passive optical network (PON) units for fiber-to-the-node/fiber-to-the-premise networks.

The two companies also announced in a news release that they are currently “working together on developing integrated voice and data (IVD) line card solutions which incorporate xDSL data access and VoIP processing on a common line card.”

Today’s news follows Mindspeed’s recent announcement about it integrating the Comcerto VoIP processors into Viking InterWorks' VRDE1401 family of voice-gateway modules. The combined system will enable voice equipment manufacturers to add voice services to existing router, enterprise PBX and carrier gateway equipment.

The company launched a VoIP-over-Cable software product back in April. The company's new software combined with Comcerto Series processors is said to offer an optimized family of semiconductor systems for implementing CableLabs' PacketCable initiative for digital multimedia services over two-way cable plant.
