Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Tim Cuprisin column: Milwaukee Public TV's new digital lineup will start on Labor Day

(Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, The (KRT) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Aug. 28--One of the complaints from TV viewers who've taken the plunge early and hooked up their digital converters is that the regular lineups of Milwaukee's two public TV outlets haven't been available as digital channels.

That will be corrected Monday when Milwaukee Public TV adds the normal Channel 10 and 36 lineups to the digital spectrum if you're watching over the air, either on a new digital TV or through a converter box.

If you haven't made the plunge, you're probably still unaware that digital channels and sub-channels are already up and running.

The only thing that changes Feb. 17 is that the old analog broadcasting channels will be shut off.

If you're watching cable or any other pay service, you won't even notice.

THE DIGITAL LINEUP:Here's Milwaukee Public TV's digital lineup launching Monday:

--Channel 10.1 -- The complete Channel 10 schedule.

--Channel 36.1 -- The complete Channel 36 schedule.

--Channel 36.2 -- V-me, PBS' Spanish channel

--Channel 36.3 -- MPTV World, PBS public affairs programming.

--Channel 36.4 -- MPTV Create, PBS how-to shows.

--Channel 36.5 -- Classical music.

--Channel 36.6 -- Jazz music.

--Channel 36.7 -- Weather.

--Channel 37.8 -- Traffic.

As long as we're at it, here are other sub-channels available to Milwaukee over-the-air viewers:

--Channel 4.2 -- "Weather Plus" weather channel.

--Channel 55.2 -- qubo, a children's channel.

--Channel 55.3 -- ION Life, a lifestyle channel.

--Channel 55.4 -- Worship, a Christian channel.

--Channel 58.2 -- Simulcast of low-power WMLW-TV.

--Channel 58.3 -- Me-TV lineup of old TV shows.

CHANNEL SURFING: Gold medal collector Michael Phelps hosts the Sept. 13 season premiere of NBC's "Saturday Night Live." Lil Wayne is the musical guest.

--The old WB network has been revived online at thewb.com, complete with reruns of "The Gilmore Girls" and "Friends."

--Despite contrary reports, E! says Denise Richards' "It's Complicated" hasn't been canceled.

SOME DENVER NUMBERS:No, the ratings are not quite Olympian yet, and they're divided between a number of outlets, but tens of millions of people have been tuning in for the first couple of nights of the Democratic National Convention.

The biggest news is that cable continues to be a major viewer magnet, with CNN leading the pack, although Fox News and MSNBC also had major gains over 2004 levels.

The prime-time 9 p.m. hour of Monday's convention, when Michelle Obama spoke, brought in 22.3 million viewers across the various outlets, according to Nielsen Media Research numbers that don't include PBS. That total was 18.5 million on the first night of the 2004 Democratic convention.

Tuesday was even bigger, with some 26 million viewers during the hour that included Hillary Rodham Clinton's speech.

NBC was the top broadcast network both nights, with nearly 6 million viewers Tuesday night and 4.7 million on Monday.
