Microsoft, Intel, bitWallet to jointly promote expansion of FeliCa+

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)TOKYO, June 13_(Kyodo) _ U.S. microprocessor manufacturer Intel Corp., software maker Microsoft Corp. and Japan's Edy electronic money service promoter bitWallet Inc. said Tuesday they will strengthen their ties in a bid to expand e-services using Sony Corp.'s contactless IC card technology.

The three aim to double the number of online services compatible with Sony's FeliCa card technology and triple the number of personal computers equipped with FeliCa-reading functions, while doubling the amount of online payment using the technology, they said, adding they aim to achieve the goals within a year.

To achieve the goals, the companies will call on PC makers and online services providers for cooperation, they said.

FeliCa card technology is used in Edy, a prepaid contactless type of electronic money service. Edy enables its holders to make payments for goods and services simply by passing it over a card reader. It also permits its holders to charge and recharge the card at machines installed at retail outlets and other locations, as well as with their personal computers.

Edy can be used for the Net-based shopping if the personal computers used by Edy holders are hooked up to card readers, according to the companies.

The technology is also used in East Japan Railway Co.'s Suica electronic train fare card, and some companies apply the technology to their company ID cards to use it for personal authentication, they said.
