Microsoft Faces Off With Google, Unveils 'Worldwide Telescope'

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), still smarting from its Yahoo rebuff, is now squaring off against Google Inc. (GOOG) over the search company's popular 'Sky' application.

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates announced today that his company plans this month to launch its "WorldWide Telescope" project, which will compete directly with the popular "Google Sky."

"This is taking data that's very complex, gathered over many years from many telescopes, and making it accessible," said Gates, during a speech in Jakarta, Indonesia, according to PC World.

Google shares are down close to 2% in afternoon trading.
