Microsoft discontinues its energy usage tool less than a week after Google killed its

(Benzinga Lightning Feed Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Less than a week ago, we reported that Google had elected to shut down its PowerMeter service because of lack of usage by users. PowerMeter allows people to monitor their energy usage stats. Today, Microsoft revealed that it plans to shut down its “Hohm” service that is very similar to PowerMeter. The product will be shutting down on May 31, 2012 because of lack of adoption in the market. Microsoft states that it will continue to develop products similar to Hohm that may have more success on the market.

Microsoft Hohm has helped demonstrate the critical role of information in helping people and organizations improve how energy is generated, distributed and ultimately consumed. Microsoft will continue to focus on developing products, solutions and partnership that span a wide spectrum of industries, such as power generation, distribution grids, buildings and transportations systems.

The software giant hasn't given any alternatives to users looking for a replacement to Hohm.  />
