Micro-business forum for military spouses set

(Philippine Daily Inquirer Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)THE PRESIDENTIAL CONSUL-tant for entrepreneurship yesterday said a micro-business exposition and conference would be held March 31 to April 2 for spouses of soldiers and policemen as Malacaang lifted the state of national emergency.

Jose Concepcion III, who heads the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship, said the forum would be held at the Army gymnasium in Fort Bonifacio as part of a range of activities the PCE had lined up for the year.

Concepcion was interviewed at the sidelines of the three-day 4th Philippine Business Fair that kicked off yesterday at the Megatrade Hall of SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City.

The fair coincides with the Philippine Entrepreneurs Summit 2006, which Image Plus Business Solutions organized with the help of BusinessWorks Inc.

The PCE spearheaded last week's "Go Negosyo" summit and trade show for small and start-up businesses, which was part of a comprehensive advocacy campaign aimed at spurring economic growth by enticing people to put up their own businesses.

Some 50,000 people attended the forum where President Macapagal-Arroyo was the guest of honor a day before she issued Presidential Proclamation No. 1017.

"But the real measure of the summit's success is whether people would take the initiative to muster the discipline and resources to go into business and whether their ventures would succeed," Concepcion said.

Asked whether PP 1017 had countered the PCE's efforts to encourage more business activities, Concepcion said the strengthening of the peso against the dollar showed how confident the businesses were.

"We need to build up confidence and encourage optimism because people are fed up with rallies (and political turmoil)," he said. "We need an entrepreneurial revolution (to push the economy forward)."

Concepcion said the planned micro-business forum was aimed at helping families of soldiers and police officers tap additional sources of livelihood although it would be open to everybody who would want to participate.

"After that, PCE will hold an agri-business conference in Central Luzon sometime in October," he added.

During the launching of Go Negosyo last month, Concepcion said PCE intended to take up its emerging leadership role and continue fostering innovative entrepreneurship anchored on real opportunities that can alleviate the country's current economic situation.

"(Through Go Negosyo,) we hope to create a climate of optimism," he said. "If foreign investors are optimistic about the country as shown by the appreciating value of the peso, optimism among Filipinos could be more powerful than that."
