Medline Presents Advanced Wound Care Technologies at Symposium on Advanced Wound Care (SWAC)

MUNDELEIN, Ill. --(Business Wire)--

With more than two and a half million patients a year suffering from pressure ulcers and other wound and skin care complications, and 60,000 patient deaths directly related to pressure ulcers annually, more needs to be done to address this mounting issue. Medline Industries, Inc. is presenting a number of cutting edge advanced wound care products that span the continuum of care-from helping to prevent skin breakdown to full wound closure-at this week's 2014 Symposium on Advanced Wound Care. The company is showcasing its broad array of advanced wound care technologies at SAWC (booth #515), October 16-18 in Las Vegas, Nev.

In addition to featuring technologically advanced products, 11 clinical posters will be presented and authored from noted wound care specialists demonstrating prevention and treatment options for a range of skin issues using Medline advanced wound care products. Some of the posters include:

  • Use of a Chitosan Based Gel Forming Silver Wound Dressing for the Management of Chronic Diabetic Wounds, (By Naz Wahab, MD)
Chitosan, which is a derivative of shellfish, is a naturally obtained material that has been a subject of much research. The material is unique as compared to other substances such as alginates or carboxymethyl cellulose fibers, because chitosan carries a positive charge at physiological pH. Medline's Opticell® wound dressings are comprised of chitosan based fibers and are proven effective for use in a wound environment. They are also available in a silver containing gel forming wound dressing that can be used for the management of diabetic wounds. In this study, the chitosan based silver dressing was used on 9 patients with 13 wounds for a period of 2-7 weeks. All but one wound, belonging to a patient who was later hospitalized, decreased in size. The chitosan based silver dressing was conformable, maintained its original size, and had high integrity.
  • Hospital Wide Toolkit for Preventing and Managing Moisture Associated Skin Damage, (By Tod Brindle, SN, RN, ET, CWOCN, CLIN IV)
In an acte care setting, Moisture Associated Skin Damage (MASD) is a major issue that can be prevented with a combination of education, assessment techniques differentiating MASD from a pressure ulcer, and the use of the right products at the right time, depending on the nature of the challenge. In this study, Cyanoacrylate based products, such as Medline's Marathon® Liquid Skin Protectant, were used to help manage MASD on peristomal skin, which can be very challenging. In addition, for protection against more commonly managed MASD conditions, three separate topical skin protectant products were replaced with one zinc-oxide and white petrolatum based ointment, Medline Remedy Phytoplex Z-Guard® skin protectant containing botanical ingredients. The results included significant savings without a reduction in quality.

"Moisture Associated Skin Damage (MASD) is a large issue for healing wounds, especially for those patients with incontinence or under ostomy care, including G-Tubes and tracheostomy," said Tod Brindle, SN, RN, ET, CWOCN, CLIN IV. "Non-cytotoxic, cyanoacrylate-based monomers, such as Marathon, form a remarkably strong protective layer over the skin and protect it from prolonged exposure to moisture, which weakens and damages the skin surface and makes it more susceptible to breakdown."

Additionally, to help clinicians provide comprehensive wound care to their patients, Medline is featuring a number of next-generation wound care technologies at SAWC, including:

  • Medline Remedy® Phytoplex® Skin Care - Medline's Remedy Phytoplex Skin Care line combines advanced skin care science with beneficial botanicals to create solutions specifically formulated to nourish and moisturize sensitive skin.
  • Optifoam® Gentle Dressings - Optifoam Gentle is an all-in-one dressing for fluid handling to create the ideal healing environment. It is highly absorbent with a moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR) that adjusts to the fluid level in the wound. Optifoam Gentle's silicone border provides gentle adhesion while its waterproof outer layer protects the wound and helps keeps bacteria out.
  • Puracol® Plus Wound Dressings -The Puracol Plus line of wound dressings promote natural healing with 100% native bovine type I collagen. Our exclusive, gentle manufacturing technology preserves the collagen's natural structure, resulting in dressings that provide more collagen to a wound for a longer period of time. Puracol Plus is ideal for wounds that are chronic or stalled.
  • Revitalon® HCT/P wound covering - Revitalon is made of human amniotic tissue and available in an innovative multi-dot application that is less expensive than a large sheet. Revitalon is a membrane allograft that is an outstanding weapon in the battle against chronic wounds. Because it is minimally processed, its structure and composition is resistant to the body's rejection responses.
