Medline and National Breast Cancer Foundation Support National Mammography Day on October 17th and Throughout the Year

MUNDELEIN, Ill. --(Business Wire)--

The American Cancer Society reports that an alarming 68% of uninsured women and 48% of women with less than 12 years of education are not getting a mammogram.

As women (and men) continue to struggle to obtain the recommended breast cancer diagnostic screenings due to financial or other hardships, Medline is pleased to support the National Breast Cancer Foundation's (NBCF) National Mammography Program, offering breast cancer screenings, diagnostic procedures and its Patient Navigation programs on National Mammography Day, on October 17th, and throughout the year. Since the campaign's inception 13 years ago, more than 240,000 procedures, as well as 400,000 plus patient navigation services, have been provided to people in need cross the country.

"The number of people missing out on important breast cancer screenings and diagnostic procedures in this country is devastating," said Martie Moore, RN, MAOM, CPHQ, chief nursing officer, Medline, and a spokesperson for the company's internationally recognized Pink Glove Dance campaign that helps raise awareness and money for breast cancer education and prevention. "National Mammography Day and the free mammography program are simple solutions for increasing awareness among and providing life-saving services to all people, no matter race, education, economics or geography."

The NBCF National Mammography Program is composed of 58 screening and diagnostic programs, and 23 patient navigation programs that deliver services in all 50 states. It requires that medical facilities within the NBCF network have the capacity to continue treatment after an abnormal finding or diagnosis of breast cancer. (See list of participating facilities: NBCF National Mammography Program.)

"Early detection saves lives! Research shows that when breast cancer is detected early, in the localized stage, the five-year survival rate is 98%," said Janlle Hail, co-founder and CEO of the National Breast Cancer Foundation. "Companies like Medline continue to support our life-saving screening programs to give access through the latest technology available to those in need."

Medline is committed to advancing breast cancer awareness and prevention. In addition to supporting the NBCF free mammograms, the company also hosts the Medline Pink Glove Dance Competition, which has brought thousands of survivors, patients and healthcare professional together to dance wearing Medline's signature pink gloves in support of breast cancer awareness; the Pink Glove Diaries, which engages people year-round and encourages them to tell their own real life breast cancer stories; and the NBCF comprehensive breast cancer education, Beyond the Shock®, on Medline University. Moreover, Medline's partnership with the National Breast Cancer Foundation has been instrumental in helping support a wide-range of services and programs that target those in desperate need of breast care resources.
