Meals on Wheels, a United Way agency

Nov 20, 2012 (Durant Daily Democrat - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- This week's United Way agency is Meals on Wheels. Meals on Wheels is a program that brings food to the doors of many residents in Bryan County.

Meals on Wheels is a network of churches and organizations that deliver one hot meal Monday through Friday to people who are home bound due to age or disability.

In 2011 alone, Meals on Wheels served 7,148 citizens in Bryan County.

"For some of the people it's the only time they see someone all day," said volunteer Joyce Attaway.

Meals are delivered to these home-bound residents between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. each day.

Attaway said the program is not just about giving people a meal. Volunteers check on the welfare and living conditions of the residents they serve as well.

The general cost for a meal is $1.50, however, if a resident is in need and truly cannot afford the meal the program reaches out for others to help, said Attaway.

Meals on Wheels is nonprofit and all workers are volunteers. The food is provided by the Southern Oklahoma Nutrition Program (SONP).

Attaway said some of the organizations will also provide extra food for special occasions such as holidays.
