McAlister elected FM mayor

Nov 04, 2009 (The Fort Morgan Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Fort Morgan City Councilman Terry McAlister was elected mayor Tuesday, and city residents voted down alcohol in the park as well as pay raises for council members and the mayor.

New members winning seats on the city council were Brent Nation and Scott Bryan, according to unofficial results from the Morgan County Clerk and Recorder's Office.

Another ballot measure, allowing the use of the city's fiber optic network for high-speed Internet service and other telecommunications services, got the thumbs-up from voters in Tuesday's election.

McAlister earned the mayor's post over Eugene Jinkens by a margin of roughly 59 percent to 41 percent.

McAlister currently represents the city's Ward 1, the western part of the city, on the council and works in sales. Jinkens is an assistant power plant manager.

McAlister will not assume the mayor's post until the election results are canvassed and he takes the oath of office in January. Current Mayor Jack Darnell was term-limited and could not run for re-election.

Jinkens said he was "obviously a little disappointed in losing the election, as I had hoped to be able to help lead the city in the future as mayor, especially with so many issues facing the city and the council in the near future. I am very pleased with the votes I did receive and appreciate the support that the citizens and business owners of Fort Morgan showed for me during this process." Jinkens also expressed disappointment in the turnout, which was estimated at about 40 percent of registered voters.

"With so many issues on the ballot and with the number of positions up for election, as well as this being a mail-in ballot year, I would have thought there would have been a much higher ballot return rate," he said.

McAlister's election as mayor will open up a vacancy on the council in Ward 1. The other current Ward 1 councilor, Ron Shaver, chose not to run for re-election.
