Mansa Capital Appoints Healthcare Finance & Private Equity Veteran, James Renna, as Operating Partner and Head of the Firm's Operations & Advisory Group
BOSTON --(Business Wire)--
Mansa (News - Alert) Capital Management, LLC, a Boston-based private equity firm
focused on growth equity investments in the $2.5 trillion healthcare
sector, announced today that it has appointed James Renna as Operating
Partner and head of the Mansa Operations and Advisory Group. Renna joins
Mansa from Steward Health Care, LLC, New England's largest
community-based hospital network with $2.5B in revenues and 18K
employees, where he was executive vice president and chief financial
officer. Earlier, Renna was a senior operation/finance executive with
Cerberus Capital, a PE firm with more than $20B in capital under
management. At Mansa, Renna will utilize his experience in healthcare
finance, capital management and operations to identify and fund
innovative healthcare companies with high-growth potential. Jim will
also provide management and operational support to ensure growth and
operational goals are met for each portfolio company.

"We're thrilled to have Jim on-board. He's a powerhouse with the right
combination of experience and achievements both in healthcare and in
PE," said Mansa Managing Partner and CIO, Ruben J. King-Shaw Jr. "Given
his track record, we look forward to having Jim work with us to identify
sources of capital for innovative healthcare businesses and assist the
managers of our portfolio companies to optimize performance, maximize
returns and manage risk for our investors."
Prior to Mansa, Renna was Steward Health Care's EVP and CFO. There, he
helped finance and integrat six acquisitions nearly doubling the
company's footprint. He led numerous financings and asset monetizations
totaling over $350M, which funded the company's ambitious growth goals
and centralization of all back office functions.
Earlier, Renna was a Cerberus Capital Senior Operating/Finance
Executive, where he was responsible for the governance and oversight of
seven controlled portfolio companies, primarily in the sectors of
Biotech, Pharma and healthcare services, with a combined EBITDA of $1B.
He was instrumental in an international carve-out and business-building
exercise that led to a 22x return and award for "PE Deal of the Decade."
He helped to execute billions in financing/refinancing (i.e. common
equity, public/private debt, and revolving credit facilities), one deal
of which led to "Debt Deal of 2009." Renna also assisted in building one
business from its infancy with a $30M investment, which sold for 13x in
four years.
"Renna will identify opportunities consistent with Mansa Capital's
investment strategy. He will also develop and conduct due diligence
assessments and participate in fundraising," added King-Shaw, who
previously served as Senior Advisor to the Secretary of the U.S.
Treasury, and earlier was COO and Deputy Administrator of the Centers
for Medicare and Medicaid Services. "I also look forward to Jim playing
a key role as a member of our Investment and Management Committees."
Mansa Capital aggressively seeks out high-growth investment
opportunities in healthcare IT, distribution services, and care
management. Companies with innovative approaches to contain costs while
improving clinical outcomes are at the center of its investment
strategy. The firm is particularly interested in healthcare companies
meeting the needs of Urban and Hispanic populations. Mansa looks for
companies with up to $150M in enterprise value, and seeks to make
investments ranging from $5M to $10M.
"After many years in finance, including roles in healthcare, and working
with more established corporations and investment firms where I
specialized in streamlining operations, growing companies and maximizing
returns, I'm eager to join Mansa where I can contribute to growing its
debut fund," said Operating Partner, James Renna. "The firm's focus is
timely given the immense opportunities provided by implementation of the
Affordable Care Act. There is an increasing need for innovative
technologies and culturally-sensitive preventative care services, and
Mansa is well-positioned to lead the way."
