(Winnipeg Free Press (Canada) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) PEOPLE Dr. Ben Albensi (principal investigator, synaptic plasticity and cellular memory dysfunction, division of neurodegenerative disorders, and associate professor, department of pharmacology and therapeutics, University of Manitoba) has been appointed to the board of directors of the Movement Centre of Manitoba (MCM). MCM uses conductive education to help people with neurological conditions gain or regain physical mobility, increased confidence and functional independence, while providing affordable access to all individuals who could benefit from conductive education programming. Albensi has also been appointed as associate editor for the journal Brain Injury. This journal is the official journal for the International Brain Injury Association, based at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va.



Dr. Pawan Singal Director of the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences (ICS) at St. Boniface Hospital, and professor of physiology, University of Manitoba was recently inducted into the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) in Ottawa. Membership is considered one of the highest honours for the Canadian health sciences community. Singal is known worldwide for his work on oxidative stress (when oxygen is improperly handled within a cell) and heart failure, and researches why after a heart attack many patients subsequently go into heart failure. His pioneering studies have furthered understanding on how various antioxidants have the potential to prevent or treat the damage associated with the oxidative stress and the toxins created. Most recently, he has been researching anticancer drugs and changes that could be made to improve therapeutic approaches in the treatment of cancer patients. He has co-edited 30 books, published over 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts and received over 80 national and international recognitions.

Jack Jonasson has been appointed the new general manager of the West End Cultural Centre. Jonasson has 15 years of music experience with a broad perspective that encompasses the artist, management, promotion, booking, venue management and business facets of the industry. For 41/2 years, he booked and ran Lo Pub, which provided a platform and a community for countless local, national, and international musicians to launch and promote their careers.


Jenny Motkaluk formerly of Economic Development Winnipeg and 5x Technology, has joined the team at the Eureka Project as vice-president for business development.
