Man charged in area robberies

CLINTON, Jan 01, 2009 (The Fayetteville Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --

A Dunn man is accused of going on a robbery spree Tuesday that ended when he was found in the Falcon area, investigators say.

Lee Britt Williford, 30, of the 100 block of Stone Place, is charged with robbing stores in Spivey's Corner, Dunn, Harnett County and Fayetteville, according to a news release from the Sampson County Sheriff's Office.

A clerk at the Friendly Mart at 16906 Spivey's Corner Highway told investigators that a man approached the counter about 6:30 a.m. with an item to purchase, the release said.

When the cash register drawer opened, the man leaned over the counter and took the paper currency and left in a gray Toyota pickup, the release said.

Investigators viewed the surveillance camera video and recognized the man as Williford, the release said.

An alert was issued to area law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout for the Toyota truck, the release said.

A Cumberland County deputy spotted the truck parked outside a vacant store building at 8206 Falcon-Godwin Road about 8:30 a.m., said Debbie Tanna, a spokeswoman for the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.

Williford was taken into custody without incident, Tanna said.
He has been charged in Sampson County with common law robbery, larceny of a vehicle, possessing a stolen vehicle and misdemeanor larceny, according to the release.

Charges are pending against him in Dunn, Harnett County and Fayetteville, the release said.
Williford's bail was set at $253,500.
