The magazine rack
Feb 09, 2010 (The Kansas City Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
And boy, are their arms tired
Conde Nast Traveler (February) says there are people who collect as many frequent-flier miles as George Clooney's character in "Up in the Air" and get all sorts of perks as a result. The magazine says the best U.S. frequent-flier program is Continental's OnePass. The toughest is Delta's, followed by United's. The article also offers some numbers, including "17 trillion frequent-flier miles in circulation ... which would get you two-thirds of the way to Alpha Centauri" and $170 billion worth of frequent-flier miles in circulation, "more than the cash reserves of either the United States or Germany."
Sunny side
Kiplinger's Personal Finance (February) offers the story of a couple who have cut their electric bill beyond zero. By slashing electricity use and then adding solar power, they now get around $46 a month for the extra electricity they send to the power grid. They figure their solar system will pay for itself in about nine years, but they emphasized that they cut their use first, switching to compact fluorescents, getting rid of a clothes dryer and hot tub, and buying a smaller refrigerator: "There's no point in paying for a solar-power system when you're wasting electricity."
