Madison man charged with 40 counts of possessing child pornography [The Wisconsin State Journal]

(Wisconsin State Journal (Madison, WI) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Feb. 15--A Madison man who admitted an attraction to "the pretty young girls" was charged Tuesday with 40 counts of possessing child pornography after state agents searched his home and found not only images on his computer hard drive but children's clothing and candid photos he took of children in swimsuits.

Joel M. Hunter, 55, told agents from the state Division of Criminal Investigation that he used his computer to download child pornography from an Internet file-sharing service, according to a criminal complaint filed in Dane County Circuit Court.

Hunter also said he collected printed photographs of children, both clothed and unclothed, by "Dumpster diving" outside businesses that develop pictures, which is also how he found the children's clothing.

Hunter appeared in court Tuesday, where he was jailed on $10,000 bail.

According to the complaint: State agents executed a search warrant Friday at Hunter's condominium in the 300 block of Harbour Town Drive on Madison's Far West Side.

A preview of Hunter's laptop by a computer forensic analyst found more than 700 movie files, most of them with names suggesting they are child pornography, and more than 200 image files, some with names suggesting child porn. He was charged for possessing images and movies that, when viewed, were found to be child pornography.

Asked if he was attracted to children, Hunter said he instead said he was "interested" in children, in particular he was "interested" in the toddler age. He also said he was attracted to "the pretty young girls." Hunter also admitted that he used his camera in Hawaii in June 2011 to take photographs of children on the beach and that he had taken video of teenage girls at a pool while testing his camera.

Hunter said that when he started looking through Dumpsters at photo businesses and found the pictures of children, "something changed" and he had to keep finding the photos. He said he "can't stop" looking at the photographs anymore.

State agents routinely monitor file sharing services on the Internet looking for Wisconsin residents who download or share large amounts of child pornography. After determining the address of the user, agents obtain search warrants to seize computer equipment or other evidence related to the sharing of child pornography.
