Macon police officer on leave after arrest in domestic incident

Dec 02, 2008 (The Macon Telegraph - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
A Macon police officer is on five days administrative leave pending terminination after being arrested Friday.

Dennis Benjamin Wood, 31, of Gray, has been charged with misdemeanor cruelty to children, misdemeanor theft and family violence-related simple battery, according to Bibb County jail records.

The Medical of Central Georgia police responded to a medical office at 770 Pine St. in reference to a domestic problem on the afternoon of Nov. 25.

Wood's wife said that the two had argued. During the argument, Wood allegedly took his wife's cell phone and refused to return it. He also pushed her against a wall to keep her from getting the phone, according to a police report.

Responding officers said there was a red mark on Wood's wife's arm after the incident. Their child witnessed the argument, according to a police report.

Wood was arrested Friday morning and was released on $4,700 bond later Friday, according to jail records.

Macon police chief Mike Burns said Wood was placed on administrative leave pending investigation after police became aware of the incident, and he was placed on leave pending termination after his arrest Friday.

Wood was hired by the Macon Police Department on Jan. 29, 2007.
