Los Angeles City Council Endorses Proposition 10 as Key Solution to Addressing Housing Affordability Crisis

Today the Los Angeles City Council voted to endorse Proposition 10, a statewide ballot measure that will empower local cities and counties to limit skyrocketing rent increases and curtail predatory housing practices. With this vote the City of Los Angeles joins with over 80 local governments and elected officials throughout the state, including the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors, which endorsed the common-sense initiative last week. The motion was authored by Councilmembers Marqueece Harris-Dawson and Mike Bonin.

Los Angeles City Councilmember Paul Koretz said, "Skyrocketing rents are a leading cause of the homelessness crisis. Yet a state law has shackled the hands of local governments to address high rents. Proposition 10 will give local leaders the power to take the steps necessary to protect renters and prevent homelessness."

Los Angeles has the highest rate of unsheltered homeless people in the country, with over 58,000 people living on the streets. This number continues to grow as homelessness among LA children, college students and seniors surges. What's more, LA apartments cost 100 percent more than the national average. Proposition 10 will allow local governments, including Los Angeles, to take immediate action to address this crisis on their terms and foster long-term economic and community stability for their people.

"This endorsement sends a strong message that time is running out for the Wall Street real estate investors who have caused our housing crisis and are pouring millions of dollars into the opposition campaign," said Damien Goodmon, campaign director for Yes on 10. "Just as the LA County Board of Supervisors affirmed one week ago, the City Council's vote further demonstrates the our local communities are ready to put a check on skyrocketing rents to protect our seniors, children and families from predatory landlords. The rent is too damn high!"

The broad coalition of trusted organizations and advocates urging Californians to vote YES on Proposition 10 -- from the League of Women Voters, ACLU, California Democratic Party, California Teachers Association, California Nurses Association and California Alliance of Retired Americans, to the Los Angeles Times and Sacramento Bee -- continues to grow. Community leaders up and down the state recognize the urgent challenge at hand and that we must make every tool available to our cities and counties to ensure all residents have a safe, healthy and affordable place to call home.

Prop 10 is a key step towards solving California's housing-affordability and homelessness crises as it will protect California's renters and guarantee landlords a fair rate of return, all while laying the foundation for stronger communities. By empowering local communities to limit rent increases and curtail predatory housing practices, cities and counties will be able to create thoughtful laws to address their local housing situations.
