Lorusso elected Belmar fire chief Swearing-in follows vote by department members

(Asbury Park Press)THE Belmar Fire Department has elected three officers for 2006.

Nicholas Lorusso of Belmar moved up from first assistant chief to chief, Charles Spannos of Wall moved up from second assistant chief to first assistant chief and Joseph Rizzitello Sr. of Belmar was elected second assistant chief.

Rizzitello was the chief of the department in 1992.

The officers are to be sworn in by Mayor Kenneth Pringle on Jan. 1.

"I'm very honored to serve as chief in Belmar," said Lorusso, who has been a member of the fire department for 31 years. "With all the plans for new developments in Belmar, the fire department will have to keep abreast with training and manpower."

The plans include redevelopment of the downtown area to attract more pedestrians.

An estimated 10,000 square feet of retail space is planned under affordable 1,000-square-foot condominiums with one to two bedrooms on Main Street.

"I'm hoping to keep the fire equipment updated to serve the town in the best possible way," said Lorusso, who was chief of the department in 1991.

The Borough Council adopted a resolution approving the elections for the Fire Department at a recent meeting.

The three departmental officers will oversee operations at the Goodwill Hose Company, Union Fire Company 1 and Volunteer Hook and Ladder Company.

The officers are responsible for incident operations, coordination of fire personnel and fire apparatus, said John Rizzitello, fire administrator.

"I wish them all luck, and look forward to working with them next year," said Rizzitello, a nephew of Joseph Rizzitello.

The officers were nominated and elected by 40 active fire department members.
