Called NRF2, the firm is claiming "more than one million hours [114 years] mean time to failure at an operating junction temperature of 230°C using a 10% drift failure criteria". Production is on 100mm substrates and applications are seen in military communications, cable TV and point to point microwave.

The target application will be next-generation cloud computing and data centres. The silicon photonics-based active optical devices comprise four 28Gbit/s transmit and receive channels powered from a single laser for an aggregate data rate of more than 100Gbit/s.

www.molex.com Non-touch field-sensing chip Plessey has released an electrostatic field-sensing chip for security, switching and gaming applications. Called PS25401, the new chip can detect movement through walls, said Plessey, and can drive a relay "to act as a simple non-touch electric switch. It can also be used to replace, or as an adjunct to, a passive infra-red (PIR) sensor." www.plesseysemi.com Intel has 16% of chip market Intel will have sales of $49.7bn in 2011, up from $40.4bn in 2010, giving it 15.9% of the total semiconductor market, says IHS iSuppli, and a 6.5% market share lead over second-placed Samsung. The third biggest chip company this year is TI, with 8.4% growth helped by its acquisition of National.
